This Friday our students in Year 3 to 6, gathered as a College at the Senior Campus for the Whole School Commissioning of our Leaders, including our Junior School leaders, Captain and Vice-Captain and House Captains and Vice Captains, as well as SRC. This is a historical event, as it is the first time in many years, the College will have Year 11 leaders also commissioned. Afterwards we gathered for some refreshments with staff and parents.
The boys were voted in democratically after a nomination period, speech, and election process, right down to the distribution of preferences. A further commissioning of Aussie Sports leaders, Mini Vinnies and Choir and Band leaders will take place in an upcoming Junior School assembly, on Wednesday March 1 at 8.45 am.

This week we had three different sports commenced. JSSATIS 3/4 cricket, JSSATIS 5/6 tennis and flippaball. Thank you to all the students who have signed up to play. I would like to thank Mrs McCullagh who has spent many hours preparing our teams for their respective competitions. Thank you also to the staff and parents who have volunteered to help coach or manage a team, we couldn’t do it without you! Good luck to all the boys.
During the next month your class teacher, or one of our office staff will be in touch with you if your son is on a Learning Plan. This will be to coordinate a meeting time to discuss your son’s needs and set achievable goals for him for this year.
Our House Swimming Fun Day will be next Friday March 3 at the Glenorchy War Memorial Pool for students in Years 3 to 6 only. All parents are warmly invited to attend.
The College participates in two inter-school carnivals in Term 1 - JSSATIS and STCPSSA. To enable a team to be selected for these carnivals we conducted trials this week. The announcement of the SVC Swimming Team will be in our next newsletter.
Welcome back to the library for the new year! It’s very exciting to be able to offer this lending service to all students on two days a week this year; Wednesday and Friday. So far classes that have made a visit to borrow have noticed the new look picture book tubs and have made positive comments on how cosy and welcoming the library looks.
A huge thank you must go to Mr and Mrs Sutton for arranging and building these new look tubs over the holidays.
March is a big reading month on the library calendar so please stay tuned to hear more about the reading promotion that will be offered to students, there will be prizes and house points up for grabs!

Next week, students and families in Prep, Year 4 and Year 6 will participate in the Circle of Life program. This program is the endorsed Catholic Education Tasmania program used for all Catholic schools. It is fully supportive of Catholic perspectives, together with the Australian Curriculum and the Growing Towards Wholeness Policy (Archdiocese of Hobart). This is a service offered to schools and families around the state by Catholic Education Tasmania, delivered by an expert educator in this field, to assist parents as the primary educators of their children in the area of sex education, sexuality and protective behaviours. Circle of Life has a strong emphasis on parental involvement and support.
We strongly encourage students in Prep, Year 4 and Year 6 to attend with a parent or guardian if they are able to. If you have not yet given your RSVP, please let us know whether you can attend.
Please note that the venue for these sessions has moved to the classrooms of the year group being presented to.
On Wednesday morning, students and staff from Year 3-6 gathered together in St Mary's Cathedral for an Ash Wednesday prayer service. Because of two years of COVID-19 restrictions and then the Cathedral Restoration Project last year, it was our first opportunity to pray together in the Cathedral as a community in a long time. The boys heard about the call to turn back to God through prayer, sacrifice and service during the season of Lent, and participated prayerfully in receiving a cross of ashes. Our early years classes also had prayer services in their classrooms where they reflected on how we can show we are sorry when we hurt others and how Jesus is a model of kindness and love for us.
