Garden with Claire

It’s such an active time in the garden for insects and plants and also for the F-2 students. Grade 1’s and 2’s marvelled at the amazing sunflowers that are growing in our garden. We were blown away by the size of the flower head, how many seeds it carries and how its stalk can hold such a heavy weight. Exploring the life-cycle of a sunflower plant alerted us to the importance of pollinators like bees and butterflies - we won’t have food without them. It also taught us that it is important to plant the seeds and plants during the correct season. With this new information, we chose to plant radish, spinach and silverbeet seeds. We will look after these seeds under a sunny window in our classrooms until they are big enough to plant in the garden.

In Foundation, we were introduced to the garden space. We had a look around and marvelled at the variety of plants growing in the garden. We had a sensory experience feeling, smelling and touching a variety of plants and explored how to move around the garden respectfully and safely.

Kitchen with Elisa

In the Kitchen Garden, we not only learn about where our food comes from, it is also a great opportunity to learn about the importance of nutrition and keeping our bodies healthy. Our first lesson in the kitchen introduced us to the foundations of healthy eating and nutrition. The kitchen is a busy place so it was important for us to start our year understanding how our classes run as well as the part each of us play in creating a safe and fun learning environment in the kitchen.

Our garden is brimming with summer produce so we were able to use tomatoes, zucchini, rhubarb, lemon verbena, strawberries and peppers in this week’s menu. We made salsa, zucchini fritters, rhubarb and strawberry crumble, lemon verbena cordial and roti bread.

Thanks for the continued support of all of our volunteers. Because of you we were able to hit the ground running with an excellent program for our students.

We do still require helpers for the kitchen during the week and on Thursday mornings for help in the garden.  If you are able to assist please contact the school office.
