Applied Learning Centre Planning Begins
This week the working party began deliberations to plan for the Applied Learning Centre at Cranbourne Campus. VCAL , which is the Victorian Certificate of Applied learning has seen a huge expansion over the past six years at St. Peter's College due largely, to the practical hands on nature of the course, and the excellent pathway opportunities into paid employment at the end of Year 12.
In order to keep pace with this expansion the working party, which includes architects from Y2 will design a purpose built facility to cater for the needs of our students who undertake applied learning in their studies. The facility will not be restricted to VCAL students but will cater for a diverse range of students, encouraging applied learning, creativity and collaboration.
The team will this week travel to several off site visits to take notes on best practice across Victoria. The Year 11, 2018 VCAL students also visited a range of facilities and developed a Vision for Applied Learning. It was a pleasure to listen to their suggestions for the fit out and design of the new building. Students will be consulted further as the planning progresses in order to honour student voice and wisdom.
Agreed Principles for learning Spaces are:
- present a variety of learning opportunities in the details of the building itself
- replicate real life and professional experience
- are safe ,inclusive, connected to the outside
- cater for a diverse variety of users at the same time
- are multipurpose, expected to be changed/adapted in the future
- allow versatility that allows both House gatherings and specialist areas
- facilitate use of technology in a pervasive way
- foster positive relationships and community
- allow for furniture to be moved around and re-configured ( Including creative storage that is accessible to students)
- incorporate professional-grade acoustic engineering measures
- accommodate changing technology and a multitude of devices
