Student Voice

Year 5/6
Throughout Term 2, the Year 5/6 students have been learning about the importance of being good global citizens. This has involved researching a campaign topic of their own and using strategies to help promote their cause. Students were encouraged to choose a topic related to sustainability with the understanding that humans can have a negative impact on Earth. They were asked to present their work to their peers and later reflect on everything they had achieved. Some topics included: Upcycling, Space Junk, Deforestation, Fracking and many more.
Endangered Pandas
Mattea Kirby
1. Describe your campaign topic and explain why you chose it.
My topic is deforestation. It is the permanent destruction of trees. The forests don’t get replanted after being cut down. I chose it because I thought it was a big problem in the world. All the animals and people need trees to survive. Trees produce oxygen for everyone to breath. Forests are the homes and shelter to lots of animals around the world.
2. What did you want to achieve?
I wanted the world to notice this problem and help stop deforestation. The world can’t survive without trees so I want people to replant trees and not cut down so many.
3. As a group, what were some of your successes?
My group and I worked well together and completed the task we wanted to achieve. We helped each other when we needed it.
4. What are some of the most significant things you learned?
We learned that 7 billion trees are cut down each year. Forests now cover only 6% of the world but they used to cover 11%.
5. If you had to restart your campaign, what would you do differently?
I would try to find out more information and create a longer speech with more facts.
Renewable Energy
Nadila Abeydeera
1. Describe your campaign topic and explain why you chose it.
My campaign is all about renewable energy. The main reason I chose this topic was because I always had an idea of this issue but I wanted to learn more about it and what I could do about it.
2. What did you want to achieve?
What I wanted to achieve with this campaign was to inform others around the world about this issue to at least reduce the amount of pollution we input into the world.
3. As a group, what were some of your successes?
Some success’s we had as a group were spreading all the tasks out evenly and so it was all fair.
4. What are some of the most significant things you learned?
One of the most important things that I have learnt in this unit is how such a large issue is happening but many people have no clue about it. I also learnt about how there are not that many penalties for companies that produce pollution.
5. If you had to restart your campaign, what would you do differently?
If I had to restart my whole campaign I would try to practise our presentation a bit more in the sense of being fluent. I would also try to do some more activities together so we all learnt about it. Also I would try to manage my time better.
