Tricky Photos

As part of National Boarding Week, each house had a go at taking a tricky photo. We also received a entry from Bethany Robertson who photographed Amber Pearce whilst stand-up paddleboarding.

Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (PARTY)

In Week Five, Year Ten students participated in the Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth (PARTY) programme at the Albany Regional Hospital. This is a fantastic initiative, following on from the Keys of Life programme, which provides an overview of the dangers of drugs, alcohol and risk-taking behaviour in 15-24 year-olds, as well as the consequences of these actions.

Members of the Albany community shared their experiences, as did hospital medical and rehabilitation staff, providing information and practical demonstrations of tools used in the process of recovery from trauma.

An Ambulance Paramedic, with the help of Brent Crowley, demonstrated how to transport someone with a suspected spinal injury. The group then enacted the roles of Emergency and Trauma staff and were allocated as Airway Doctor, Airway Nurse, Circulation Doctor and  Circulation Nurse. The students completed a thorough assessment on a full anatomical dummy, complete with inserting a cannula and catheter into the mock patient. Although this was confronting, the explanation given by the resident doctor and nursing staff reinforced the consequences that risk-taking behaviour can lead to.

Feedback from the students was fantastic, with all reporting that the course was worthwhile and effective in delivering important messages about safety. William Penny thanked the hospital staff on behalf of everyone who attended.
