Independence Centre

Curriculum

Last week started off with a bang at the Senior Swimming Carnival! With events ranging from 50 metre freestyle to a relay noodle race, the students (and teachers) all really enjoyed the day. Even Robbo came for a visit! Thanks to all of the parents that came along to help out on Monday, it made the day run so smoothly. Congratulations to all those students that qualified for the District Swimming happening on Friday 21st February.

Throughout the week, students in the Independence Centre worked on their speeches to convince their class that they would make a good Student Representative Council (SRC) member. Students wrote about their top character strengths and why these would make them a strong leader, as well as including some improvements and/or ideas that they have for the schools future. Later in the week, these speeches were presented by those students interested in the role. The competition across the centre was tough! Votes were cast and decisions were made, each class choosing two representatives. Congratulations to those that were chosen! You will do a great job this year. All parents and friends are invited to come along to the SRC badge presentation this Friday 21st at assembly.

In Reading, students made predictions before, during and after reading the text. They used text clues such as the title, pictures, events in the story and their own prior knowledge to predict what would happen next. While making these predictions, it was important that students explained the reason for their prediction. In Mathematics sessions across the week, students continued to investigate place value. A lot of work was done using number lines to accurately position numbers, with some students practising whole numbers and others beginning to explore decimal numbers. Later in the week, we moved on to hundreds charts, completing a range of puzzles to put them back together. Students used their knowledge of place value to correctly position pieces of the hundreds charts, with some of the charts having missing numbers in them.

Reminders

If your child has not returned their I.C.E notice with their 6 preferences, this needs to be returned to school as soon as possible.

We are trying to reduce rubbish at our school so nude food is always a great option, otherwise students will be taking home their rubbish in their lunch boxes.
