Leadership Centre

Curriculum

The second full week of Term 1 and the holidays seem a long time ago! We’ve been busy in the Leadership Centre with many events like the Swimming Carnival, STEM Challenges, SRC Speeches and more hot weather!

On Monday, the Year 3 to 6 students headed to Aquarena in Doncaster for the annual Swimming Carnival! All students participated with enthusiasm and showed encouragement for their house and team mates. Congratulations to Eugenia for winning the overall event. A big thank you to all the parent volunteers that helped with scoring, timing and organising students before they raced, the day wouldn't have been so successful without you! Good luck to the students who made it through to District and are competing this Friday.

In Mathematics sessions, students continue to explore Place Value through a range of games that require them to identify features of a number or rounding to the nearest place. A popular activity from last week was ‘Yahtzee’ students rolled dice to match the criteria on their page. In the following session students created their own game using criteria like ‘A number with 5 in the tens place’ or ‘two digits add up to 12’.

In Reading rotations, students moved into their second Book Club roles and have been making text to self and text to text connections with the Indigenous story ‘Stolen Girl’. It has been interesting listening to students access their prior knowledge and how parts of the story have reminded them of other events or similar emotions. In Writing, students brainstormed exciting endings for three scenarios and created a Ban the Boring Bits poster to be displayed in the class room. This will be referred to again this week when students complete their first Narrative Talk Homework and Big Write.

On Thursday we completed our first STEM Challenge and we had perfect, sunny weather for it too! Students created their own Sundial and recorded the changes in the shadow over time. While students waited for their Sundial to change, they made different poses and had a partner draw their outline! Students were able to make many observations such as, which way was North, how the outlines were all facing the same way and were ‘short’ and how to read the time (roughly) using the Sundial.

To end our week, we spent more time with our Buddies! The Grade 6’s and their Year 1 buddies sang their hearts out in the hall with Mr Shaw and the Year 5’s helped their Foundation Buddies by measuring them with string as the Foundation students begin to explore length this week.

Have a wonderful week! Mr Andrew Shaw, Miss Ros Walker, Mr Hamish Burrill and Miss Megan Campbell.
