Welcome to Mathematics in 2020
Welcome to Mathematics in 2020! Everyone has begun their numeracy lessons and it has been fantastic to see the mathematical language being used around the school.
The teachers are all eager to begin the year and get stuck into their mathematics lessons, helping students to see themselves at mathematicians and enjoy the challenges this presents; just as they see themselves as authors or writers during English sessions.
Some of the key emphasis for 2020 are:
- Providing real-world problem solving, giving students a chance to apply their mathematical understandings in a context that they can relate to
- Engaging students in mathematical language
- Creating learning opportunities that reinforce numeracy development and growth mindsets
- Teaching at point of need, using on-time assessment to aid in student learning
As a parent, it is important to be involved and a positive influencer on your child’s feelings towards mathematics.
Some Tips for parents
- Be positive about mathematics, even if it isn’t your strong suit
- Show mathematics at work in the real world, use mathematical language at home with your child, e.g. Can you please get me a 2L milk, when out shopping
- Encourage them to count continuously, when setting the dinner table, how many pieces of cutlery are there? Are there more forks or spoons on the table? Small questions like these encourage your child to develop their mathematical skills in an informal setting
- Make maths a game, explore how scoring systems work in different sports, AFL, Tennis, Golf, discuss the way that teams are ranked on a sports ladder, what happens if they are on the same amount of points?
