Perth Hills Discovery Centre

Year Four Excursion: Koolangars, Corroborees and Kaleeps
On Wednesday the 3rd April, Year 4 students and teachers visited the Perth Hills Discovery Centre. Students have been learning about the daily life of indigenous Australians before settlement.
Upon arriving, students were taken on a Nyoongar cultural journey through traditional language, ceremony, hunting and fishing. Students learned how Aboriginal people survived using natural resources sustainably while caring for the environment.
Highlights were trapping fish with a net made from reeds, spearing jonga (kangaroo) with their gidgees (spears) and making rope from reeds. Students enjoyed these activities so much, they wrote letters thanking the staff at the Discovery Centre for leading them through the cultural journey.
This is an annual excursion for Year 4 students as part of their HASS curriculum. We look forward to returning next year as we grow student’s awareness of indigenous Australians and their culture.
