Maths Competition

In August this year, selected students from Years 5 and 6 competed in the annual Newcastle Permanent Primary Mathematics Competition. The competition aims to help children develop their numeracy and problem-solving skills through a range of challenging questions. Almost 20,000 students compete across the state and the students from St Edward's were certainly up for the challenge!

The results were released last week and the school can proudly announce:

in Year 6:   9 Distinctions and 16 Merit Awards.

in Year 5:   2 High Distinctions, 6 Distinctions and 13 Merit Awards.

An extra congratulations goes to Angus Bridge and Matthew Jackson for their High Distinction Awards. Their excellent results have meant that they have been invited to a Mathematics Camp next year where they will complete a range of mathematical workshops and physical recreation activities. We wish the boys the best of luck next year on camp!

Kinder 2020 Orientation Morning – Friday 1st November

Congratulations and well done to our 2020 Kindergarten teachers, Miss Boyd, Mrs Lane and Miss Urquhart for a very successful Kinder 2020 Orientation Day last Friday.  Our second Orientation Morning will be held this Friday 1st November from 9.30am to 11.30am in the Kinder classrooms. The children will again need to wear casual clothes, bring a hat and something to eat and drink for morning tea.

Huge thanks to the following wonderful people for giving up their time to assist at the new clothing and clothing pool stall last Friday in the Hall:  Bec Evans, Ferne Wilson, Catherine Thomas, Brittany Cloake and Sue Kellett. Your help was so greatly needed and appreciated!!

Brain Olympia

On Tuesday 29th October St Edward’s hosted the cluster event of Brain Olympia. The day was a great success with schools joining us from Tamworth, Manilla and Uralla. Three St Edward’s teams took part in the day and should be commended for their efforts taking out the top three positions. All teams performed well throughout the day, especially in the public speaking section. The Mighty Minds were eventually awarded overall winners of the day, with The Quizzards taking out 2nd place and The Big Brains coming in third. Two of our successful teams, Mighty Minds and Quizzards will now travel to Narrabri on Tuesday 12th November to compete in the Diocesan Final.  We wish them the best of luck.  A special mention must go to Katie Bui and Liliana Gilbert from Year 6 who assisted Mrs Lane in  co-ordinating the day so efficiently.

Mighty Minds:  Chloe Rex, Thomas Errington, Ella Murray, Maddie Studte, Paige McMillan, Lilly Androutsos, Sam Studte & Riley Miller.

The Quizards: Hannah Pawsey,  Luke Fensbo, Sam Salvestrin, Alexis Masters, Jimmy He, Tahl Handsley, Lara Cartan & Tom Jefferys.

The Big Brains: Ariel Mettam, Fletcher Norman, Hannah Briley, Bailey Bower, Matthew Jackson, Jasmine Williamson, Juliet Mettam & Eva Hudson.

2020 School Travel Applications Now Open

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday 11th October 2019.

Students progressing to year 3 and year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

·  are continuing at the same school;

·  are residing at the same address;

·  have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.

If students need to update their information or re-apply, they should go online to https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/updateDetails

Applications need to be submitted before 31st December 2019 to ensure student entitlements are updated and their current entitlement/card is not cancelled. If their application is submitted after 31st December 2019, the system will automatically cancel an entitlement/card and a new one will need to be issued.

Students residing in Rural and Regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at the commencement of the new school year from their nominated operator, this may be distributed via the school or sent direct to their address. Note: some R&R operators do not issue travel passes. Students/Parents should confirm with their nominated operator if they do not receive a pass.
