Year 10 Study Skills Session

Year 10 Study Skills Session

On Friday April 1, all Year 10 students participated in a memory and mnemonics session conducted by Elevate. This session was organized to further help students improve their study techniques, increase motivation, build confidence, and improve exam performance (mid-year exams will be held this coming June). Students were shown how to overcome reliance upon rote learning, the role of attention in memory and managing distractions, and learning techniques for memorisation.

Below are some examples of strategies and resources that were shared:

  • Learning a language? Label your house! Get a sticky note pad, and write the translation of many objects in your home and stick them around: your fridge, the mirror, the door (everything). Your home will become an interactive set of notes.
  • Some great free memorisation apps & websites include:

• Memrise.com

• Quizlet.com

• Duolingo.com

  • Do you take the bus to school? Record yourself saying your notes aloud, or some key terms and definitions that you need to memorise. Then listen to them on the way to school or while you go for a jog. All that transit time can be used to reinforce key information.

The Year 10 cohort will be participating in another exam revision session on the May 13. In the meantime, students are being encouraged to begin organizing their revision and summary notes, in preparation for their exams this June.
