War Memorial

Yr 10, 11 and 12 Canberra Trip

During the first week of the School holidays, 17 students along with Mr Zampogna, Mrs Piccione, Mrs Casey and Mrs Rampova flew to Canberra for an incredible experience visiting a range of sites linked with their Legal Studies and Law and Order units of work. Some sites included Parliament House, The War Memorial, The National Museum of Australia, The High Court and the National Gallery.

On Tuesday 12 April, we visited the War Memorial. "The Australian War Memorial is based in Canberra, and exists to help Australians commemorate the sacrifice of those who have served and died in war. It is also an outstanding historical research centre and a venue for many exciting and dynamic exhibitions.”  Along with the exhibitions, each day at 4.55pm, the Last Post Ceremony is conducted and live streamed on Youtube. During the service, one soldier is commemorated and their family members are invited to be part of the ceremony.

On the  day we visited, Private John Clarence Mara’s story was read out.  Special mention was made of our Marian students' attendance along with Payton and Brigid representing Marian College in laying a wreath during the service.
