Prayer

ANZAC Day was commemorated by our Marian Community on Wednesday 27 April. Each Homeroom chose students to lead the prayer service for their class. The service included a short clip explaining the history of events that lead to this being such an important day in the calendar. ANZAC Day is not a day that glorifies war, rather it gives us an opportunity to reflect for a moment on the sacrifices of young men, women and families who enabled us to live with freedom and safety.

The service included the following prayer.

God of love, peace and compassion,

We pray for those who gave so much for their country. May we always remember their gifts of freedom and peace.

Through the example of the ANZACS, we have learnt the value of sacrifice, friendship, compassion and courage.

Through our prayers, may we develop these qualities, which gave our country freedom and peace.

We pray for all the men and women who struggled against fear and hopelessness so that we may be free.

For all who sacrificed their lives for their country.

For all innocent victims of war – the children, the families, the refugees.

Amen

Take a few moments to silently reflect upon the words of Oscar Romero who gave his life speaking out in defence of his countrymen.

Peace is not the product of terror or fear.

Peace is not the silence of ceremonies.

Peace is not the silent result of violent repression.

Peace is the generous, tranquil contribution of all to the good of all.

Peace is dynamism.

Peace is generosity.

It is right and it is duty.

Bishop Oscar Romero 1917-1980
