Grade 5/7

VHAP (Grades 5 and 6)

The Victorian High-Ability Program (VHAP) provides up to 48,000 high ability students in Years 5 to 8 at government schools the opportunity to participate in online extension and enrichment programs, in English and Maths. The virtual program, delivered by Virtual School Victoria, focuses on extending and developing students' abilities. Each program runs for one 1 hour session per week for 10 weeks.

The Department is centrally managing the selection process for the program based on student academic performance (NAPLAN and Compass reports data). The Department notifies schools and then parents of the students selected for the program are contacted and provided with more information. Please note that student selection for the program is not run by the school, but is a process run by the Department.

The families of the students selected for the Term 2 program have been notified.

Some direct quotes from a selection of the Year 6 students who participated in the Term 1 program:

Literacy Program

“It has been a great experience. I loved learning about the history of writing and good techniques for writing - including different types of first and third person writing. We learnt about the cycle that many books follow, which is ‘The Hero's Journey’.”

“It opened us up to new ways of writing. We learnt new techniques like how to evolve characters and stories.”

“I liked VHAP. It was fun. We covered different writing styles and characters and ended the program by writing a short story.”

Maths Program

“The program covered divisibility rules and cracking ciphers as well as the history of numbering systems that were in existence before Arabic numerals. I learnt that interestingly, the majority did not use the base 10 system.”
