Design & Technology

Year 7 Technology

In our Technology class' Agriculture unit this term we have been learning about how to prepare soil, sow and care for seedlings and how to develop compost to make fertile soil.

We have also been fortunate enough to have been incubating 36 chicken eggs in our classroom! The time seemed to fly over the course of 21 days and was exciting to see our 13 chicks hatch; sadly not all of them will hatch because they aren’t all fertilized.

After they hatched (perfect time for Easter) we have been keeping them in a brooding box underneath a heat plate which simulates a mother hen. Once they grow bigger we will move them into a chicken coop.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the chickens next term, please contact with Mr. O'Keeffe: bokeeffe@bmgs.nsw.edu.au

The different heritage breeds of chickens that have hatched are:

  • Belgium d'uccle
  • Plymouth Rock
  • Silver laced Wyandotte
  • Bantam Pencilled Wyandotte
  • Pekin Bantam
  • Hamburg
  • Aracuna
