Leadership Centre

Term 2 Week 2

Curriculum

Halo semuanya - hello everyone!

Welcome back! We hope all Leadership Centre families enjoyed a restful two weeks away with family and friends! We are well into the swing of things for Term 2 already and we are excited to get straight back into a range of different learning tasks. It has been impressive seeing students settle back into daily routines and classroom expectations.

In Writing, students have began the term experimenting with a range of different prompts for a Lightning Write. A Lightning Write is a 10 minute writing session where students write any type of paragraph - generally one of the Seven Steps to Writing Success in order to practice thinking and writing on the spot. We have been very impressed with the work that they have produced, particularly extending on from our work in Term One! Students also explored the nature of patterned writing where we looked at the context of nouns, adjectives, verbs and prepositions within a sentence. The students learned that they can use various patterns to ensure they have each of those four elements of a sentence and that they can create additional sentences by adapting the words involved in these four elements.

A focus this term for our students will be to build their engagement and passion in Writing, so this week, during Leadership Hour, we had students work in groups to explore how we could create better engagement, inspiration and enjoyment in our writing across the school. It was great to provide students the opportunity to explore their own student voice and continue to build their knowledge around the agency that they can have over their own learning.

In Maths, we are beginning our focus on Addition and Subtraction for the term. As we have just come back from our ANZAC Day public holiday students investigated the nature of being a soldier at war and calculating costs of items and materials they would have taken with them. Students practised using estimation and rounding and a range of number strategies to demonstrate their mathematical thinking clearly. In all our maths sessions, we are also aiming to incorporate digital technologies to assist with calculations where possible.

Have a great week!
