Music Matters

As 2021 comes to an end, we have had some boys completing exams for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB). Miss Laura Power has informed me that some of her students have performed well in these exams. It is with pleasure that I report the following results,

Matthew Moore (Year 10) - 4th Grade Clarinet - A

Michael Krizan (Year 9) - 4th Grade Clarinet - A

Oliver Hartry (Year 6) - 3rd Grade Clarinet – A

Well done to the students and Miss Power. We celebrate these results.

It was great to hear the guitar and percussion ensembles in full flight over the last couple of weeks. Just a reminder there are some auditions planned for other ensembles over the next couple of weeks readying for 2022.

The PAPA AGM will be taking place early in Term 1 next year. The PAPA Committee is looking for some new members for the committee especially in the vice president and secretary roles. This is a great group who do much to support the performing arts at SPX. We have a concert planned for the Concourse Term 2 next year and our usual Twilight concert and student evenings. All are welcome to join.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream Performances

We have been very lucky with the weather and were able to perform our Year 9 scenes in the garden at the back of the Sarto Centre. The students have experienced a long journey in their exploration of Elizabethan Theatre and Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. We started this unit online and students spent weeks rehearsing their scenes over Teams. Their resilience and optimism were impressive. Not once did any student complain about the situation, instead, we looked carefully at the language, rhythm and poetry of Shakespeare. We explored practical activities created by The Globe Theatre which were possible online. It’s testament to this bright, funny and thoughtful group that every activity I put forward they were keen to try. Once back in the classroom the focus has been making the motivations of each character apparent and obvious in the body. Using the space dynamically and creating a relationship with the other character. Please take time to look at the photos of each performance which I think certainly show dramatic meaning and creativity onstage.
