Literacy

Welcome back to Term 2! It’s going to be a busy term, with teachers focusing on setting reading and writing goals for their students making sure that they are helping them achieve those goals through targeted, small teaching groups.

There is lots of great writing going on across the school at the moment. We have some fantastic work coming out of the Year 3 and 4 classes focusing on persuasive writing. Students have been working on planning persuasive pieces from a particular point of view and writing engaging introductions showing a clear point of view through the use of high modality words. Excellent work everyone! Here are some of the students examples.

I certainly like dogs more than cats because they can protect you from dying, although if it is not trained they can be naughty.

By Stefan Koteski

I'd definitely choose dogs rather than cats, because dogs are not lazy, although dogs bark a lot.

I am absolutely positively sure that children should have a set bedtime because it is healthy for your mind although if it is too early it could be a bit hard to sleep.

By Sophie D’Alia

I definitely prefer cats than dogs because dogs can badly hurt you, although cats can sometimes scratch if threatened.

Senior students have been working on up-levelling their writing from simple sentences to complex sentences. After reading ANZAC Bear and discussing the history of the ANZACs during the last century, this student wrote this amazing complex sentence summarising what she had learnt. It is very tricky for children to transition from writing simple sentences to sentences like this one. This is an example of some truly interesting and mature writing- well done Hannah!

Tutoring and Enrichment 2021

We are very excited to be launching a brand new component of our Tutoring program in Term 2. Part of the government funding for the tutoring program is to provide extension and enrich learning opportunities within the school after Remote learning.

We have prioritised an approach to enrichment, alongside explicit numeracy extension, that will gradually build expertise across the school for all and extend to the STEM program by introducing some new and exciting Lego robotics equipment. Our enrichment groups will learn how to operate and program these robotics together through trial and error, collaboration, applying knowledge gained through understanding the 'sphero' technology and then through a peer tutoring approach, will coach other students to use the 'Spike' and 'Mindstorms Evolution' systems. They will navigate challenges together, test, imagine and modify their robots to perform a sequence of actions or perform a task. We look forward to sharing their learning throughout this year.
