Maths

This week we have been learning about mass. We have learnt about kilograms and grams.

We know that there are 1000g in a kilogram and we have measured the mass of objects using scales. We love maths!

Reading

In Reading this term, our students have become book detectives and have been looking closely at the different roles in Reciprocal reading: The Predictor, Clarifier, Questioner and Summariser. Each week the students unpack each role by looking at its definition, its impact in our reading and the strategies needed to practice the role individually and within a group setting.

Writing

Wonder what we’ve been learning in Writing this term?

We have been writing to persuade our teachers whether to get a classroom pet or not; to do this effectively we have been using persuasive devices such as rhetorical questions and exaggeration. Here are a couple of examples of our students engaged in their persuasive writing.

Year 4 News

In Grade 4, we have settled back to school with ease. We are all eager and excited for the 2021 school year!

Reading

In Reading we are focusing on predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarising. We have also set up our classroom libraries and are looking forward to sharing our love of reading.

Writing

In writing we are focusing on persuasive texts. We have learnt about the different types of persuasive texts and the purpose of writing them. We are also looking closely at the structure and writing our own persuasive pieces.

Throughout this year, we will be working on creating our ‘Writer’s Notebook.’ This book is a tool where we can engage in the fun of writing. It’ purpose is to nourish and inspire us, as writers. Please continue to bring in things to add to our writer’s notebooks.

Here are some possible things to bring in:

  • Tickets collected (cinema, water park, swimming pool, art gallery)
  • Photos of experiences (day at the beach, cooking, going on a hike)
  • Collecting objects (beautiful leaf, food wrapper, card, maps, pressed flower)
  • Drawing/sketches (sitting in the city and drawing Flinders Street Station, a plant, animal seen at the park)

Maths

In Maths we are learning different strategies to solve addition and subtraction equations. We will soon be focusing on addition and subtraction worded problems. Our favourite Maths games at the moment are Pacman, Buzz and Mastermind.

Year 6 News

For Term 1 in Maths we are learning to add and subtract Fractions with related and unrelated denominators. In Writing, we are learning to write our own persuasive pieces using the OREO strategy. We are Analysing, Critiquing and Synthesising persuasive texts and persuasive devices used in Reading. This has been fun. In PE we are practising our athletics skills getting ready for Athletics day, such as high jump, long jump and sprinting. In Science we are learning all about micro-organisms, and in groups we swapped different items and areas around the school that have lots of bacteria and placed them in Petri dishes. We are currently waiting to see the results! In Digi-Tech we are learning how to read and write Binary numbers. It is super interesting as we haven’t learnt this before - thanks to the new teacher Mr Bennett! In PBL/humanities, we are learning how to be change makers. We will be creating a BTN style video in groups to raise awareness of issues around the Brookside College Community, such as rubbish. We are really enjoying Year 6 and can not wait for the year ahead with all our teachers!
