Year 1 News

In Year 1 in our maths lessons we have been focusing on counting and data. In counting, students have been focusing on counting up to and beyond 100, practising skip counting by 10s and making towers of ten to represent large numbers with unifix blocks.

In Data, students have learnt all about collecting information about their peers and representing this data in tallies and pictographs. Students have been practising reading pictographs and identifying things such as the most favourite choice and the least favourite choice.

In our writing, students have been practising writing recounts about events and experiences in their lives. The students are getting very good at writing a number of sentences in an ordered sequence. Students have been practising to include their tricky words in their writing correctly.

Year 2 News

It’s hard to believe that the end of first term is almost upon us. The year 2’s are relaxed in their new classroom environments with their new teachers and classmates and are enjoying being at school to learn.

In Initial Lit we have been exploring nouns including common nouns, proper nouns and pronouns and working on how to improve our written work using adjectives; including how to identify them in a sentence.

In reading our focus has been on comprehension and we have been exploring imaginative texts and information texts. Each student has also been given their own individual reading goals during conferences with their classroom teachers.

In our storybook lessons we have been reading stories including Willy the Wimp, The Snail and the Whale and Pete the Sheep followed up by discussing the story. After that we do our word work where we work on the vocabulary in the book and then we explore beyond the book where students complete written tasks linking the book to their writing. Through storybooks students are exposed to language that they might not necessarily find in everyday conversations.

In Numeracy, we have been looking at learning about number lines and how they can assist us with solving number problems.

This week we have started looking at time connected to the order of the days of the week, the months of the year and knowing which months the seasons fall in. We have also been reading and interpreting calendars.

We learnt about Closing the Gap Day by watching videos and having discussions. Then we decorated hand outlines in the colours of the aboriginal flag and discussed the importance of looking after and caring for others in particular Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.

In play-based learning we have been exploring how we are similar and different to each other. We have been working together and accepting our differences and our strengths when we work together. We have been completing play-based tasks to understand our differences. We have been working on creating a positive classroom culture together.

The students are looking forward to our Easter Bonnet Parade on Monday the 29th of March

and also Crazy Hair day on the last day of School for the term on Thursday the 1st of April. Don’t forget students need to be collected from school an hour earlier on this last day at 2.15pm.

We hope all our Year 2’s have a relaxing and enjoyable break from school on the holidays and we look forward to seeing them after the break refreshed and ready to learn in Term 2 on Monday the 19th of April.
