The Simpson Prize Competition

The Simpson Prize is a national competition for Year 9 and 10 students. The competition encourages participants to focus on the significance of Anzac Day and to consider what Anzac Day means to them and to Australia.

The student winners, runners-up and teacher chaperones enjoy a two-day trip to Canberra where they visit several of the capital’s museums and institutions, attend the presentation ceremony at Parliament House, and enjoy a formal dinner at the Royal Military College, Duntroon.

Eight prize-winners will then travel to Turkey for the opportunity of a lifetime! They will embark on a twelve-day exploration of Istanbul and Gallipoli, and take part in the commemorative ANZAC Day ceremonies at various sites on the Peninsula.

Shrine of Remembrance

50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan Commemoration

On Thursday 18 August, students from Lilydale High School went to the Shrine of Remembrance to commemorate 50 years since the Battle of Long Tan.

Anzac soldiers fought fiercely in a rubber plantation against a vastly larger force of North Vietnamese and Viet Cong, with the Anzacs eventually being victorious.

The commemoration consisted of a parade of Vietnam veteran soldiers, field medics, engineers and both North and South Vietnamese veterans, along with other member of the community such as scouts and school students.

After the parade, we observed the Long Tan cross being placed in the forecourt of the Shrine and wreaths being laid.  We repeated the Ode to the Fallen and finally sang the National Anthem.

It was a a fun and informative day and filled us with pride for the toils of our brave diggers.
