SEAL PROGRAM

Year 8 Excursion

On Thursday 4 August, Year 8 SEAL students joined other SEAL students from Fairhills and Emerald Secondary Schools at the KIOSC in Wantirna for a day of Science Workshops.

What is KIOSC?

The Knox Innovation, Opportunity and Sustainability Centre (KIOSC) aims to inspire and empower today’s students to develop the skills, knowledge and behaviours which will equip them for their future careers.

KIOSC emphasizes practical learning experiences through a range of programs that provide a window into the world of work, linking a broad range of pathways in science, maths, technology, social sciences and humanities to integrated hands on curriculum.

Through innovative learning experiences and strong connections with industry, KIOSC opens students’ eyes to the practical applications of classroom learning and the real world careers they lead to.

Students comments of the day at  KIOSC

Wantirna was awesome! We participated in experiments that are usually given to Year 10s. We got to mix  chemicals and perform complicated psychological experiments. It was good fun building the Lego mechanics as well.     Sam

I enjoyed all the activities, but unfortunately, as we ran out of time, I wasn't able to complete all the psychology tests. I enjoyed Chemistry the most of all the activities.    Zac

I enjoyed the copper experiment.  Seeing the solution turn different colours was cool. I also liked doing the STROOP test because I like brain challenges.   Gabriella

What I most enjoyed about going to KIOSC was learning all the different techniques to find copper within copper at the start of the day. When the colour changed from a dark blue to an aqua, it was cool. All up, the day was great and I would enjoy doing it again.   Benjamin

I had a great time on the Technology excursion.  Our class did an experiment in Chemistry, tricked our brains in Psychology, and used Lego in Engineering. Overall, I had a fantastic  time.   Hannah S

My favourite part of the excursion to KIOSC was using the chemicals and changing copper back to copper. It was cool.    Maddi

We did a science experiment  on making copper from copper.  We went and made a little machine. My personal favourite was the little meditation and the thing where you see a coloured word and have to say the colour, not the word.  The science chemical experiments we conducted were for Year 10’s.    Jake
