Fundraiser BBQ for Emily Spencer 907
On Wednesday this week, a BBQ was held at lunchtime to help raise money for Emily Spencer to go to SPACE CAMP in September this year.
Thank you to students and staff for purchasing sausages, drinks and lollie bags!
What is SPACE CAMP?
Each year, the Lighthouse provides visually impaired and blind children (9 to 18 years) tuition scholarships to SCIVIS (Space Camp for Interested Visually Impaired Students).
The SCIVIS program uses space to excite and educate students in the fields of Maths, Science and Technology. Among the many benefits attending SCIVIS; teamwork, self-confidence and communication skills are taught through state-of-the-art simulations, missions, rocket building, robotics and conducting experiments on the International Space Station.
The SCIVIS week is coordinated by teachers of the visually impaired from all over the United States. Special considerations are extended during this week to put the students at ease including enlarged print and attention to mobility hazards.
The blind students also benefit from the latest technology in the field, including tactile Braille displays, CCTV’s, large print output, and synthetic speech for computers.
Year 9 - Health and Wellbeing Day
Friday 12 August
Year 9 Boys
Theme - Participate in life as healthy, resilient and respectful young men.
The boys watched a video about a surfing program in South Africa that mentors young people. They reflected on such things as having a supportive adult in their lives, being active, being part of a supportive group and how we should be hearing more about these types of good news stories.
For a bit of fun, the boys then learnt how to tie a tie. Some boys even mastered the full Windsor.
After morning tea, the boys heard from Riley Hams (Year 12) about how he has dealt emotionally with difficult times in his sporting life such as major injuries.
Mr Reedyk then discussed with the boys the difference between what society thinks a “Real” Man is, as opposed to a “Good” Man. The boys enthusiastically contributed to a list of what they felt were the most important qualities of a Good Man. The following week, a small group of boys narrowed this down to the 5 most important qualities which were; loyalty, respect, love, honesty and showing appreciation.
Before the sausage sizzle lunch, the boys were taught the Haka and then gave a loud and forceful rendition.
After lunch they participated in either a footy match, basketball clinic and game, darts, nerf games or a drumming workshop.
We appreciated the way the boys got involved on the day and hope they got something out of it.

Year 9 Girls
On Friday 12 August, the Year 9 girls took a trip to the Lilydale Lutheran Church for a Health and Wellbeing day.
To begin the day Miss Nevins and Miss Wilson gave us the rundown on the activities for the day. We were put in to groups based on coloured cards that we received. We went around the circle telling the group three fun facts about ourselves. It was very interesting to find out things about people who we wouldn't usually talk to. Then we got into groups of our own choosing. Within that group we got given pieces of paper and we wrote down a compliment for each person in our group.
Next, as one large group, we discussed resilience and the importance of it. After that, three of our very kind Year 12 students, Sam, Amy and Caitlin came to talk to us about how they have to be resilient in their life. This was very eye opening to a lot of the girls. Then we had recess - apples, bananas and popcorn were on offer.
We then got back into the groups from earlier and expressed our opinion on what to do in tough situations in our day to day life. We either agreed or disagreed with the scenario. It was interesting to see others views and opinions. In the same groups we were given three cards with different personality traits on each. We had to try and swap with other people to get cards that most suited the way we viewed ourselves. We then discussed whether we were happy of disappointed with the cards and why. We then spoke about relationships and friendships. What qualities we look for, in significant others and why.
Soon after Miss Nevins blasted out her tunes and we all began to dance to Tay-Tays 'Shake It Off!' To follow that, lunch commenced. Sandwiches and wraps were up for offer. It all tasted great.
When lunch came to a halt, we started up our activities again. We got to choose two activities to do. We could choose from yoga with Miss Harmes, gym/weights with Miss Rundell, aerobics with Miss Kelso and Miss Crotty, creative meditation with Ms Mogilewska, confidence, decision making and self-defence with Miss Cumming and Miss McGrotty or a walk around Lilydale with Miss Kaspar and Miss Hemmings; which turned out to be Pokémon hunting.
Once we finished both of our activities, we sat back down and listened to Miss Cumming jamming out on her guitar.
Miss Nevins and Miss Wilson then wrapped everything up with another dance. At 3.00 pm we said our goodbyes and off we went.
All in all, it was a fantastic day and everyone enjoyed themselves.
