The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk.

The National Gallery of Victoria is hosting an exhibition that presents remarkable artwork that was designed by Jean Paul Gaultier the famous French haute couture designer. The exhibition is running from 17 Oct 2014 to 8 Feb 2015 and it will feature more than 140 astonishingly hand crafted garments in addition to photographs, sketches, stage costumes, excerpts from runway shows, film, television, concerts and dance performances.

Each room of the exhibition consists of a different theme. The exhibition begins with the odyssey then continues to The Boudoir, Punk Cancan, Skin Deep, Metropolis, Urban Jungle and finishes off with Muses. They all create a different experience through lighting, music and the unique twist added to the mannequins. Its almost as if the clothing had been brought to life!

Jean Paul aims to produce work that challenges society's ideas of beauty, which is why he proceeds to use models of all ages, sizes, culture, gender and religion. Some of his designs cause great controversy but it is without a doubt bold and creative resulting in anyone that goes to see the exhibition to be completely awestruck.

The piece that impressed me most was a structured dress that was made up of straps that form empty squares. The dress resembles a building because of its line work. It has a very long train which would make wearing it impractical. Another piece was the leopard skin dress made out of thousands of tiny beads, it took 1600 hours to complete.

The students of the year 11 studio art class were lucky enough to be able to go see the exhibition first hand. All of us who attended were enthusiastic and interested in what was on display. Hopefully we can all use Jean Paul's work as inspiration and motivation to continue creating and extending our ideas.

On Wednesday 5 November the Year 11 studio arts students travelled to the NGV Melbourne to view the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition. While waiting in the foyer for the introductory talk prior to seeing the exhibition, Brian McKinnon the NGV'S indigenous arts officer greeted us and he commented that he had fond memories of his time working with the students. Some may remember the arts collaboration between the NGV and our school which involved workshops, gallery visits and lectures over an eighteen month period and culminated in a official opening and exhibition at the NGV.
