Alec

Alec from 5/6M travelled to Sydney for the largest Australian competition for younger fencers, which also attracts many international competitors -- Alec was able to practice his Japanese a bit. Alec fenced epee and foil in U10 and U12 age groups and won individual silver in U10 epee event. In each event, he was a Victorian top-3 ranked fencer that earned him a spot in four Victoria A teams (team is three fencers plus a reserve). He then went on to win gold with Victorian U10 epee and U12 foil teams. Both team events were thrilling. In epee, his team was down 2 points, 38:40, before Alec's last bout, which Alec won 6:0 against an increasingly frustrated opponent, for the final score 44:40. In foil, they beat a very strong Singaporean team in the semi-final, after dismal start of 1:8, and then the NSW team with home turf support in the final. Alec was far smaller (as on the photo) and far less experienced than all the opponents. He was worried that he would be conceding a lot of points and letting the team down, and he was very proud that he managed to draw even in many of his bouts.

Shion McDonald

Shion McDonald (5/6 K) has always been keen on creating and designing since he was little. For the last couple years, Shion and Mr Toshi Handa, the instructor of the Kodomoon Art Class, have been working on a charity T-shirts project.  Shion’s designs are being used for this project. The final products are now complete and have gone online. Shion, his family, Mr Handa and other people involved in the T-Shirt project, are very excited about its potential to raise funds for charity for people in need.
