From The Careers Team...

Hey Everyone!

This Careers update will keep you in touch with career events, expos, courses, Open Days and so on. Attending career events will assist you to make wise career decisions. Students who do research, attend events, collect information, and talk to others about careers frequently find it easier to make their own decisions.

In order to get information to students we need to make sure that each student in years 10, 11 and 12 has supplied an up to date email address that they regularly check so that the Careers team can communicate with you!!!

In the coming weeks the Careers team have the following events taking place

  • Thursday 16th February – period 3, V3 students (Year 12’s) will have a Careers and VTAC session
  • Thursday 16th February – period 3, V1 & V2 students (Year 10’s and 11’s) will have a study skills session presented by Deakin University Ambassadors.
  • During term one- all Year 12 students will have a careers conversation, where they can outline their plans for 2018 and beyond. I’d like to stress that it is alright  if the students are unsure  about what they would like to do once they have finished school. We can use this session to start working on some ideas.

RMIT ConocoPhillips Science experience

Congratulations to Jovan and Allison from Year 10 who participated in the ConocoPhillips Science Experience at RMIT in the January school holidays.

“The science experience was amazing, we got to try out different fields like haematology and biotechnology, and see what they do, go to Werribee zoo and learn about bandicoots, and even make incredibly creamy ice cream. Not to mention playing around with robots, go to the VSSEC (a space centre) and do some experiments.

The RMIT team had organised a science show to finish things off, from colour changing chemicals to supercooling metals to make them levitate.

The experience didn't change what we wanted to do, but it did open our eyes to the possibilities. The mentors had also shed some light on University life, and gave us some tips on how to maximize our productivity, especially during exams and stressful times. The program was definitely worth it.”

ATTENTION YEAR 12 STUDENTS

  • UMAT Please read the attached Careers document for up to date information on UMAT testing. In Victoria there are some Health sciences and medicine courses that require students in year 12 to sit the UMAT.  Please see Jodie with any questions.
  • VTAC’s  “30 minute mentor”

VTAC  (Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) invites any interested Year 12 student keen on being a part of their publication “30 minute mentor” to apply by Friday 24th February. Students who participated last year were paired with mentors who could answer questions about their industry and what it is like to work in their field of interest, day to day. The mentors last year included a psychologist, a photographer and a pathologist. Each of the students involved  had a 30 minute conference call with their mentors in which they could ask questions about career pathways, salaries, typical duties, lifestyle considerations and anything else they wanted to know about their future careers. All of the students had great questions and got a lot out of the experience.

VTAC are keen to publish a broad range of students and careers, so whether you are       interested in becoming a biologist, ballerina, park ranger or plumber, they want to hear from you!

If you are interested come and speak to Jodie in Careers for further information and instructions on how to apply.  The deadline for submissions to VTAC  is Friday 24 February at 5pm.

Looking forward to working with you all this year!
