The 5-word report on the 5/6 Not-So-Uber-Excursion to Sovereign Hill

By Leo Wanders ( Year 5/6 Team Leader)

My word!!!! If I was a statistician, what fun I would have had dissecting the recent 5/6 excursion to Sovereign Hill.

People: 75 students. 40 boys. 35 girls. 37 Yr 6’s. 38 Yr 5’s. 12 adults. Testosterone - 42. Estrogen - 45. Injuries - 3.

Getting there: 318 kms travelled. 5 hours on the buses using around 300 litres of fuel at a cost of $480.00 which equals $5.60 per person.

Sustenance: Lunch - The choices for the day were sandwiches at 29% followed by a pie at 14% and sausage rolls at 8.6%. 1.5% of excursionees ate donuts for lunch, 1.5% ate sushi, 1.5% ate lollies and chips and 1.5% lasted the day on no lunch at all (but I expect quite a few lollies were consumed).

Snacks: It’s not so much what was eaten but what WASN’T eaten.

Dinner - Pizzas consumed - 49, 28.5 % which were Hawaiian, 18% which were BBQ Meatlovers and 10% which were Double Bacon Cheeseburger.

Activities: Most favourite activity - 54% chose the Red Hill Mine tour; 22% chose the gold pour demonstration; 9% chose gold panning; 4.5% chose shopping as their favourite activity while 1.5% chose sleeping on the bus.

Most surprising thing: An interesting statistic was that out of the 69 students surveyed, 26% chose the Red Hill Mine tour as the thing that most surprised them while 10% chose the gold pour demonstration.

GOLD GOLD GOLD!!!! And, in amongst all of that, there was a total of 74 pieces of gold discovered in the creek that runs through Sovereign Hill. Not enough for retirement, but a healthy amount none-the-less.

The day in general: There were 31 different adjectives used to describe the day starting with 14 letters of the alphabet. ‘Amazing’ was chosen 10 times, ‘fun’ was used 8 times, ‘awesome’ was used 7 times and ‘great’ was used 4 times. Other adjectives used less frequently were ‘adventurous’ (1), top hat (1), spectacular (1) and boring (2).

Overall star rating:      4.5 Stars

Just for you: The gold used in the gold pour demonstration is the same gold that has been used for 26 years. At times it is melted up to 10 times per day and has lost only 3 grams over those years. When it was first purchased for the demonstration, it was worth $50,000. Now it is worth $250,000, a five-fold increase and six of our lucky excursionees were fortunate enough to be able to hold it.

But I’m glad I am not a statistician because that would make for tedious reading. So….. here is the promised ‘5 Word Report’ on the 5/6 Not-So-Uber-Excursion to Sovereign Hill:

‘IT WAS A CRACKING DAY’
