Opera Queensland
Our students in Years 10 to12 watched a performance of La boheme in Lennon Hall last Thursday. Thirty students from our sister college, St Monica’s, joined us for this event. Opera Queensland condensed the 2.5 hour long opera into 50 minutes and put a current-day spin on the setting so that students could more easily relate to it. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and we are so lucky to be able to bring this to them.
Cerise & Blue
On Tuesday, our Big Band and College Choir performed in the Champagnat Quad to prospective parents of the College. On the deck at Lennon Hall, our guitarists entertained the parents around the hospitality area. Visual Art showed off students working in the classroom live with clay while Film & Television next door had students editing their work and answering questions. Drama had students performing in McLaughlin Theatre and speaking with prospective students. Thank you to all the staff and students for their work on the evening in showcasing the vibrant Arts Department to all who are thinking of making Saints their school.
Saints Unplugged
Next week we will hold our annual Saints Unplugged evenings. Wednesday night is for juniors (Years 7 to 9) and Thursday night, for seniors (Years 10 to 12). The program is filling fast with some really entertaining items. There are still a couple of places left, so if your son is interested in performing, please let us know asap.
This is an opportunity for individuals or small groups to perform for parents and friends in a relaxed but intimate setting in McLaughlin Theatre. There will be nibbles and drinks available. If your son is interested in performing, please have him contact me on Teams or email: cspannenbu@cns.catholic.edu.au
Further Upcoming Events
Our annual Combined Colleges Ensembles evening will be in week 8 on the Thursday evening in Lennon Hall, following on from our Father’s Day Assembly where the senior music class will be performing for the last time as a group. The next day, the College Big Band will perform at St Joseph’s fete. In week 9, our college performing arts photos will be taken in Lennon Hall before school. Finally, in week 10, our drama students will present performances in their annual Drama Evening in McLaughlin Theatre.
It's a packed term, so mark these dates in your calendars so you don’t miss out.
An Interesting Article...
Dr Anita Collins is a music educator and researcher into neuromusical science – yes it’s a thing! The following article will give you an insight into the value of music education and the many positive outcomes it provides for our children outside of learning an instrument. Please read it and know that you are doing a wonderful thing for your children.
Communication
Much of our communication with students is via Teams and email. Please encourage your son to check these regularly so he stays abreast of what is happening, particularly given we’ve had some very last minutes changes lately due to injury and illness. Your son is also expected to contact the director of any ensembles he belongs to or his instrumental music teacher if he'll be absent due to illness or injury as the student office does not pass on such information.
Spirit of Arts Awards
All students who participate in Music, Drama, Visual Art, and Film Television and New Media are eligible to apply for an award. Handbooks and journals are available from the arts staffroom, and we encourage everyone to participate in the program.
For any questions regarding the Spirit of Arts Awards not outlined in the journal, please email me on cspannenbu@cns.catholic.edu.au
Opportunities
Each of the opportunities below can count towards the Spirit of Arts Awards.
Young Composers Competition
The annual ASME Queensland Young Composers Competition allows young composers from across the state to submit their own works for critique and assessment by our adjudicators, who work as professional composers in Australia, and vie for a prize at its awards ceremony. Previous entrants and winners have gone on to study composition at a tertiary level or work in the music industry as professional composers.
Young composers from Years 1 to 12 attending a Queensland school can enter their works across three sections: Electronic Music, Song Writing and Vocal/Instrumental. Entries close 2 September. For more information visit: https://www.asme.edu.au/qld/young-composers/
Any opportunities for our arts students outside of the College are published on the Arts Facebook Page. Upcoming performances and events are also published there under Events. Be sure to like the page to keep up with what’s happening around the College.
