AFLQ Cup

Saints claimed an assertive victory in the senior division of the AFLQ NQ Schools Cup. Will Derrington led the senior team to an 8.8 (56) to 4.3 (27), preliminary win. Saints then faced St Brendan’s College in the final, with a crushing 16.7 (103) to 2.0 (12) victory. This is a great achievement for the boys who have earnt themselves a spot in the state finals where the top four schools in Queensland will compete for the state title from 14-16 October.

The Saints junior AFL side faced a strong Kirwan High team in the preliminary finals. Unfortunately, they went down in their fixture 6.5 (41) to 5.3 (33). The boys fought hard but, unfortunately, didn’t get the rub of the green throughout the match and fell just short in a tight encounter. The team quickly bounce back to face Mercy College for a third-place showdown. The boys managed to show what they were capable of in this fixture blowing their opposition away in a dominant 61-27 victory to earn third place in the junior division.

A massive thank you to the staff who made this trip possible: Aaron Hume, Harry Austin, Frazer Rigby and John Brennan.

Meanwhile, congratulations to Noah Cockerell who represented Queensland in the AFL U17 Futures team against Victoria Metro. This is an outstanding achievement. Noah is also featured in this week’s player profile below.

JSS

Saints continued our steady start to the competition in round 3 of the JSS campaign against St Mary’s. We secured convincing wins in football (2-0) and volleyball (2-0) but, unfortunately, suffered tight losses in basketball (35-38) and touch (3-4). Our AFL team will contest this fixture in a catch-up round in week 10. All of these teams will continue to work hard to earn spots at the top of a very close ladder.

Year 8 Rugby League

In round 3, a young and largely inexperienced Saints team travelled to St Mary’s for the last match of the regular season. Saints fielded a team predominantly filled with Year 7s and 8s who have not had much of an opportunity this season. These boys showed that the future of Saints rugby league is in good hands with tries to Piiramu Wilson, Ethan Morrissey, Michael Bani and a double to Nassar Foster securing a comfortable 28-10 victory. It was great to see the team step up in the absence of their leaders and show what they are capable of. Saints finished on top of our pool and earnt a home semi-final against Gordonvale High at Stan Williams Park next Monday. Kick off is at 4pm, and it would be great to see as many supporters as possible at the game.

Special Achievements

Congratulations to Ryan Cartwright who won a silver medal at the Australian Schoolboys U16 Hockey Championships. Ryan’s performance also earnt him selection in the Australian Merit team.

Our Victorious Cricketers Celebrate Finals Wins

By Heath McKenzie (First XI coach) & Max Churchward (Junior XI coach)

Our College First XI and Junior First XI cricket teams claimed victories in the recent Cairns District finals with both teams defeating Malanda State High School.

The junior team played a semi-final in the morning, before making the final in the afternoon. They played Atherton State High School in this game. Batting first, the team set a total of 215 runs. There was outstanding batting displays from Jaden Bakurski 123, and Tommy King 52. Defending this total, Saints kept Atherton to 95 runs, with Ian de Lange the best of the bowlers taking 3 wickets for 3 runs. Rhett Gadd, also supporting, took 2 wickets for 5 runs. The team made the final with this win.

In that match, Malanda batted first, setting a defendable total of 101 runs for Saints to chase. In the bowling attack, Charlie Lawrence took 2 wickets for 19 runs. It was again Tommy King (23 runs) and Jaden Bakurski (46 runs) who steered the team to victory in the 16th over.

In the First XI match, Saints won the toss and bowled first. With the assistance of Henry King taking 3 wickets for 11 runs, Malanda was kept to a total of 101 runs off their 20 overs. Opening the batting, Dayne Margiotta took a lot of pressure off the team scoring a quick-fire 31 runs. It was then Gareth Thomas (24 runs) and Seth McGinty (17 runs) who batted sensibly to guide the team to an 8-wicket victory and chasing down the total in the 15th over.

Both teams have qualified for the Northern Conference finals in Mackay. This will be a tournament against the winning teams from Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and Rockhampton to decide the champion school of North Queensland.
