Australian Indigenous Mentoring Program

This year Dromana College will be involved in AIME again. Indigenous students from Years 9, 10, 11 and 12 students are encouraged to sign up ASAP. Years 7 and 8 students will have the opportunity to sign up later in the semester. The program includes excursions to Deakin University to connect with other Indigenous students from around the state, as well as mentor-training and tutoring opportunities. For further information, see Miss Downie.

Here is a message from AIME about the program.

AIME is a structured educational program provided for Indigenous students throughout their upper primary and high schooling experience. Students completing the program are proven to finish school and transition through to university, further education, training and employment at the same rate as every Australian child effectively closing the gap. We believe Indigenous = Success. Our Vision is to see Indigenous kids finishing school and transitioning to university, employment and further education at the same rate as every Australian child. AIME is the most proven, cost effective, scalable model in the Indigenous education space.

Indigenous students in the AIME program make remarkable progress; our stats from the 2015 nationwide cohort prove it:

  • Near perfect scores for progression from years 7 to 10.
  • 95.5% progression from year 10 to year 11, just higher than Australia’s non-Indigenous rate of 94.7%.
  • 92.9% progression from year 11 to year 12, higher Australia’s non-Indigenous rate of 88.1%.
  • 93.7% of the year 12 cohort completed year 12. 7.2% above Australia’s non-Indigenous rate of 86.5% and 35.2% above the Indigenous rate of 58.5%
  • Almost one in three (30.4%) of our year 12 graduates transitioned to university in 2016.
