The Year 7
Wheelchair Basketball incursion is one of the most popular and talked about events of the year.

This annual event (first introduced 5 years ago) is the talk of the town.
Facilitated by the HPE faculty, with the help of Year 7 teachers, this incursion gives BSC students a unique opportunity to gain greater awareness and insight around living with a disability.
This year, under the expert guidance of motivational speaker Brendan Stroud from Disability, Sport and Recreation, students had the opportunity to experience the challenges of playing sport while confined to a wheelchair.
Students listened to Brendan's moving story about his car accident (where he fell asleep behind the wheel) and how he has coped with life in a wheelchair. After an enlightening Q&A session with Brendan, receiving basic instruction on how to operate their wheelchairs as well as the rules of wheelchair basketball, students took to the court to have a go at the game.
Brendan umpired the game and assisted students where necessary. His bright and outgoing personality made an immediate impact on all the students and his instruction and encouragement spurred them to action!
This incursion never fails to challenge BSC students: they try something new, must adapt and stretch their physical abilities and experience the world from a different perspective . All this is achieved while interacting in a very positive environment and having a whole heap of fun.

Hearing what Brendan said really helped us to understand that people with disabilities are more than able to participate in sports and other activites. When we had our turn to play, we had a great game and won 2 - 0. We all enjoyed every moment of it. Qe would love to see everyone having as much fun as we did!

Brendan's talk was extremely inspirational and surprising and we learned there are a huge amount of sports in which people play in wheelchairs.

When I was thinking of the game, I was nervous and scared. But when Brendan told me how to play the game it was so much fun and I loved it!

Playing wheelchair basketball showed us that even if you are 'disabled' you can still be better than abled people in many ways. It also showed us how strong disabled people have to be to play sport.

I found Brandon's talk very inspiring as we learned how people play all different sports while relying on wheelchairs.
