message from the principal

Welcome to Term 4.  I hope a restful holiday period was experienced by all.

We have very quickly reached the transition period of farewelling our Year 12 students and welcoming our new 2017 families.  This week we will recognise our Year 12 students individually and collectively on completing their secondary schooling, culminating with Graduation Night on Thursday night.  We look forward to sharing the occasion with family members and staff.  From Friday, Year 12 students will be on their SWOTVAC period (Study Without Teaching Vacation) where they are welcome to use the school library for study or to study from home. We envisage many students will continue to utilise the school facilities and teaching staff will be available for reference during this period. The college encourages students to take advantage of these opportunities.

Students who will be Year 7 students at Brunswick Secondary College in 2017 have now been notified and we look forward to welcoming them to a number of evening events as part of their transition, the first of these being the opportunity to hear about the BSC Instrumental Music Program on Tuesday.  It has been wonderful that some of our Year 7 students in 2017 have already taken the opportunity to participate in the Chinese Festival and the Twilight Market.

The Twilight Market last Friday was a great success.  With perfect weather the school community enjoyed the talents of our student musicians as they performed throughout the evening. We were also treated to a delicious array of food stalls and a wide variety of goods for sale by vendors.  Many thanks to the Year 12 VCAL class for their contribution to the organisation of the event which forms part of one of their learning outcomes.  Staff member Chris De Grandi deserves a special mention for her efforts in supporting the students and ensuring every aspect was covered in order for the event to be such a success.

Over the remainder of this year the Leadership Team and School Council will be working on important documents which relate to the safety of students at Brunswick Secondary College. Every organisation that works with young people will be developing and publicising policies in regards to Child Safe Standards.  Many of our existing processes already comply with what is required but we will be ensuring that we communicate these processes with the school community explicitly.  We will use the Brunswick Star Newsletter, the Brunswick Secondary College website and Compass Newsfeed to communicate with our school community around these very important Standards.

Our 2017 planning is advancing and we hope to confirm student subject selections for 2017 in the near future, beginning with Year 10, 11 and 12, 2017.   This will enable families to consider resources required for those subjects in 2017 such as subject costs and books.  Processes for 2017 subject fees and general fees will also be publicised shortly through Compass Newsfeed.
