Welcome Back

Welcome back to the start of Term 2. We hope that you enjoyed the beautiful weather over the holidays and had a chance to share some outdoor time with your children.

We have a really busy term once again with NAPLAN tests for Years 3, 5 and 7 from 14th May to 24th May; a number of classes having excursions that build on their quality learning programs; a Parent Education Evening  in week 6,  academic progress reports distributed to families on Friday of week 9 and Fisher 5/6 camp to Ballarat.

On Monday we had our second pupil free day for the year. The day was focussed on Writing @ LNPS. We specifically looked at how to develop a common approach to teaching and embedding text structure and language features R-7, so that we increase student achievement in writing.

High Impact strategies discussed included:

Daily writing

Importance of "talk" before writing (dialogue and discussions)

Talking about writing

Developing the skills to be able to revise and edit texts

Conferencing and providing opportunities for feedback

Developing knowledge about the language features and structures of different texts

Vocabulary development

To support this process students benefit from:

Setting goals

Collaborating with others

Feedback

Learning in a motivating, supportive and engaging environment

This is a really exciting approach that we are taking to improve our learning outcomes in writing. If you would like to know further about this approach please speak to our teachers or leaders.

We will also be hosting an Education Forum in Term 3 focussed on Reading and Writing. Please see further into the newsletter for additional information

NAPLAN 2019

Term 2 - 14th - 24th May

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life. Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 participate in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

In 2019 most students across Australia will sit NAPLAN online. Feedback in the first year of NAPLAN Online showed that students engaged well with online assessments. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance. The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. Tailored (or adaptive) testing is designed to assess a wider range of student abilities and to measure student achievement more precisely.

The assessment window for NAPLAN Online is extended from three days provided for the paper test to nine days. Where possible, schools may arrange for individual students who are absent at the time of testing to complete missed tests at another time during the school’s test schedule.

To get an idea of what the online assessment looks like, visit the public demonstration site at nap.edu.au

Participation in NAPLAN

All students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are expected to participate in the annual NAPLAN assessment. Students with disability may qualify for adjustments that reflect the support normally provided for classroom assessments. Families are encourage to discuss the use of any disability adjustments for your child with your child’s teacher and/or leadership.

A formal exemption may be granted for a student with disability that limits their capacity to participate in the assessment, or for a student who has recently arrived in Australia and has a non-English speaking background.

If families have any questions regarding NAPLAN assessments, we can give you more information on NAPLAN Online disability adjustments or the process required to gain a formal exemption.

If you wish to discuss this further, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Dogs

A reminder to all families and friends that it is a DfE policy that dogs are not allowed on school premises, and definitely not in buildings. This is due to allergies to dogs and some young children may be frightened of them.

Also the dogs sometimes become startled by the crowds of people and behave unsafely. For this reason DfE have ruled that dogs can only be on the school grounds with explicit permission from the principal. This is not just a request from the school but a regulation for government schools.
