Upside Down World

BY DARRYL THOMPSON (MUSIC COORDINATOR)

Many years ago, a very dear friend of mine once wrote a song called Upside Down World (Gerry Holmes)

When we are weak He makes us strong
If we think we’re right we’re probably wrong!
It’s an upside down world sometimes!

When we are rich, he says, “Be poor”.
If we give it away, he gives us more.
It’s an upside down world sometimes.

The gospels are full of wonderful stories of Jesus showing us by his actions and his words what it means to live in God’s kingdom.

To a rich man, Jesus said to sell all you have and give the money to the poor.

Jesus invited himself to eat at the house of a reviled tax-collector.

To the fishermen who fished all night and caught nothing, he said to throw their nets on the other side, and they caught a mighty catch.

To his own mates, the disciples, he said that the greatest among you will be your servant. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted. (Mt 23: 11-12)

In a more recent song, Gerry wrote: “You turn our world upside down.” It seems that the world we live in needs to be turned up the right way, God’s way. He also promised to show us, if we ask.

Let’s allow him to do that, everyday, in all that we do and say.
