Year 6 Report

Term 3

What a wonderful Term we have had here in Grade 6! A few highlights for us include our excursion to the IMAX and Melbourne Museum, Athletics Day, B League Gala Day, Book Week & Book Parade and Science Week!

Inquiry and Literacy

Literacy and Inquiry this Term worked hand in hand as we read and wrote a variety of non-fiction texts and information reports. Students were given a place from around the world and began researching 'How the location of a place affects its environment'. In reading, we explored identifying topics, main ideas, important vs interesting facts, paraphrasing, using the text features to make meaning and comparing different non-fiction text types. We used our new reading skills, and project research to write Information Reports about our countries including the natural disasters and environmental characteristics of our country/place. Finally, we used our Reading, Writing and Inquiry skills to plan, draft and publish engaging Information Reports highlighting the environmental characteristics of our country/place, sharing these within our classrooms.

To draw all our new learning together, we watched an IMAX documentary following the life of a volcanic photographer and explored the Dynamic Earth exhibitions.

We have also been working incredibly hard on our Writer's Festival pieces and are excited to share these with you in Term 4!

Numeracy

This term in Numeracy, we have worked on consolidating maths strategies and problem solving skills. We have used our new skills and strategies to solve problems when more than one operation is involved. We have developed our number sense including working with squared, cubed and triangular numbers and consolidating our multiplication and division knowledge. Our Data unit this Term also helped us determine how we can improve either our Basketball or Soccer skills. We determined our area and skill we wanted to improve, decided what our variables would be, right foot vs left foot, high release vs low release, went outside and collected or data before finalising our data inquiry with a presentation about what we now know about our skills.
