Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

We are well over the halfway mark on the season, with three rounds to go for the team sports and our first AIC meet for track and field behind us. It continues to impress and amaze me how Marist boys get involved, take pride in their college and perform to their best on a regular basis. The commitment and dedication that the boys show week in and week out is sure to set them up for life. I have been particularly impressed with our 1st V basketball team. I have the privilege of watching them each week and despite being on the wrong side of the scoreboard I have been nothing but proud of the passion, effort and sportsmanship from these young men, modelled by coaches Mr James Lidstone and Mr Mike Lidstone and coordinator Mr John Lambourne.

Our track and field team continues to work hard as they prepare for their big day in Week 1 of next term. This is a huge operation, one that Marist prides itself on, and is led magnificently by Old Boy and current parent, Mr Robin Martin and a team of dedicated staff and external coaches who work hard to help the boys improve their technical and physical performance.

Our tennis program continues to go from strength to strength with our 1st IV undefeated but now facing their strongest challengers over the next two weeks in Iona and St Peters. The boys would love your support this Saturday morning at the Marist Tennis Centre. Well done to Head Coach Mr Andrew Ward for the clear improvement over the last two years.

Our rugby league boys are showing real determination and passion each week, led by Mr Ryan Apps as coordinator. The 1st XIII were gallant in defeat on Saturday in a match they could won but for the bounce of the ball. There has been steady and clear improvement week after week for these boys and they will be aiming to finish hard over the next few weeks.

Well done to our hockey team, who finished what in their minds was a disappointing season with a win against Brisbane State High School last Friday night. Thank you to Ms Kathryn Badini who works tirelessly for the hockey team.

Track and Field - Mr Derek Lennon

After a number of weeks of training the Marist primary and secondary squads were able to compete at AIC Meet 1 against the other 8 competing AIC schools.

There were some impressive performances including fast sprinting from Xavier Simms and Hugo Underwood with Isaac Ting and Joel Drew performing well in Hurdles. While in middle distance Asher Parkin ran with distinction in the 3000m event with Harry, James and Tom Prole running well in the 800m and James Wintzloff and Connor Campbell running well in the 400m events.

In the throws Josh Dempsey threw a solid discus, Lee Martin, Jono Kirk, Isaiah Burgess, Declan Blundell and Phelix Meehan worked hard in the Shot while our jumpers were consistent with Ollie Betts, Jake Musgrave, Noah Beck and Theo Calder all recoding solid jumps.

There were many personal bests and too many to mention in detail however we encourage the team to continue with their focus and pursuit of excellence for the remainder of the athletics season. This week our attention turns to Met North regional trials and we expect many personal bests and excellent performances.

AIC Trial Meets at QSAC will be held on the following dates - 1 Sept/8 Sept/14 Sept 2022. These meets will be important in finalising selections for the AIC team.

Met North Bus Details - for those chosen for Met North athletes may go with their parents directly to their events and return to school after. A bus will also be provided each morning at 6:30am leaving from the bus stop and returning at 3:00pm. Parents will need to sign up using Parent Lounge.

Basketball - Mr John Lambourne

Internal Basketball Competition

With the popularity of basketball at Marist College, there have been an unprecedented number of boys who have missed the opportunity to play Term 3 AIC basketball. There were over 150 boys from Year 7 to Year 9 who missed out on selection.

Marist Basketball Internal Competition begins this weekend and runs for the next 3 weeks; 27 August, 3 September and 10 September. The competition is open to boys in Years 7-9; there will be two divisions, Year 7 and Year 8/9. Games will be played 9:00am – 12:00pm – this schedule is subject to change week-to-week depending on AIC fixtures.

Boys are not required to pre-register. Sign-on on Saturday morning at 9:00am – meet outside the Multi-Purpose Courts in the appropriate playing attire.

It is hoped that following a successful competition that the format could be expanded next year.

1st V – Round 4 vs Padua College

Coach’s Report

The 1st V visited Padua in round 4. Recent history suggested it would be a close encounter and 2022 proved to be no different. Padua plays a very compact zone and we knew we would have to shoot the ball well as a group, especially with captain, Brent Humphreys unable to play due to an injury. We started off well turning defensive stops into easy baskets down the other end. Padua hung around and a couple of sloppy turnovers let them back into the game. The majority of the game went basket for basket until in the middle of the third quarter Padua pulled away to lead by as many as 9 but the boys rallied to only be down by 3 going into the 4th quarter. The winning team was going to be the team that composed themselves and took their opportunities. Padua stretched the lead out to 8 after hitting some big shots, we continued to fight but couldn't close the gap. It's a make-or-miss league at the Opens level and this week we missed a few too many shots and Padua made theirs. We did a lot right, just didn't put the ball in the basket enough times. We're very lucky to have a supporting crowd at all of our games, home and away and the boys really appreciate them continuing to turn up and cheer. We need to dust off Saturday's performance and put in a good showing at home this week v Iona.

Captain’s Report

Round 4 saw the MCA 1st V basketball boys take on Padua College at Kedron. Being one of our tightest competitions this year, we entered the game with a lot to prove and hopefully claim our first win for the season. Padua started strong, but the Marist boys rose to the challenge with one of our best starts so far. However, Padua retaliated, with quick transition buckets leaving us on the back foot. Strong performances by Will Ford, Ethen Tsiamalili and Dylan Cooper kept us in the game, with Will’s lane running and Ethen and Dylan’s post work being left unanswered by the opposition. Sadly, these alone were not enough to gain the victory, with the boys falling short 63-49.

Match Reports

Hockey - Ms Kathryn Badini

The Hockey team had their last game against Brisbane State High School at Burringbar Park last Friday afternoon. After what was a fairly flat first half, the boys got their plays together to end up winning the game 3-nil with two goals coming from Nick Keir (11) and Isaac Pratt (10) scoring what was probably the goal of the season. In the end, it was a great send-off for Year 12s Sam Carroll, Spencer Sharman and Bailey Russo – who will be very much missed – and indicates a very promising 2023 season.

Rugby League - Mr Ryan Apps

I hope everyone enjoyed the hard-fought battles against our old foe Padua, yet again last weekend delivered some outstanding, exciting and challenging games.

It's always a very tough round, and it was wonderful to see all of our teams give their "Always 100% Marist" never give up attitude, whether teams lost, drew or won we the school, parents and supporters were extremely proud of the effort every single player and the team gave, well done to all.

Thank you to the coaching and support staff in their development of the teams, it has been impressive to see how much the teams have grown since the commencement of the season.

With only 2 games to go, it is fantastic to see we still have some teams undefeated so far and wish them the best for another hard game this coming Saturday versus Iona at St. Edmunds playing fields. Many of our other teams are still striving to improve every training session and game so good luck to them and remember our Marist traditions and values when they run on to represent our beloved MCA.

I look forward to seeing all of our Marist teams dig and bring their "A game" this coming weekend versus another very hard competitor in Iona College.

1st XIII by Connor Lyons – Captain 1st XIII

The 1st XIII travelled out to Banyo on Saturday to take on Padua College on their Old Boys Day, with both sides drawing strong crowds, the day was shaping up to be a cracker. Ashgrove got off to a good start right from the kick-off, working their way deep into Padua's territory early with a try to Rory Baker after repeated efforts to bend the line from hit-men Jack Billing and Toby Anderson. Padua hit back with a try soon after, with retaliation from Marist coming in the form of a try out wide to fullback Jude Knapp. Padua responded with two tries and a penalty goal, pushing the lead out to 18-12 leading into the break. The home team came out firing in the second, with the Marist boys struggling to contain them around the markers leading to further leaked points. At this point, Ashgrove dug deep and fought their way back in, with gallant defence from rock-solid centres Pat Tierney and Dan Witt shutting down every attacking raid and creating opportunities for Jasper Barry to challenge the line. The rewards came, with tries to Tasman Barry and Rory Baker clawing the boys back into a 22-22 wrestle. With everything on the line, the Marist team threw everything they had at Padua, but it was not to be, with the home team scoring right beside the posts with 30 seconds on the clock, denying Ashgrove one last chance to hit back and ultimately, claiming the win.

Tennis - Mr Andrew Ward

What’s on at the courts this week?

We are well and truly past the halfway point of this year’s AIC for Term 3 which I have included match reports for Round 4 v Padua College. We are also happy to announce the Term 4 coaching schedule for both group lessons and also our fantastic squad coaching program for 2022. Our squad program has been such a success we are able to offer more to accommodate all players wishing to join the MCA Tennis team. Within one year we are seeing the effects of the program with AIC teams at present undefeated in these teams. 1st IV team and Years 9A & 9B, Years 8A & 8B, Years 7A & 7B, Years 6B, Years 5A & 5B. Years 10A & 10B only having the one loss.

Currently looking at the AIC table Marist on aggregate would be coming first and at present we are still in for a shot at all 5 premierships on offer by the AIC. This is by no means a fluke to achieve what we have so far this year. This is solely on the boys for training hard and working for each other as a team which is a culture that was lost here at Marist but my team and I have worked very hard to ensure it returned. As I have said before we want players who are part of the team not a player in a team.

In our second year of running AIC programs, I could not be happier and I would like to thank my 1st IV captain Liam Webb and vice-captain Blake Harrold for setting an example for all boys to try and achieve. Keep up the great work boys you are doing the school proud.
