Chemistry Enrichment

Year 11 students, Jack Anderson and Rory O’Kelly, were identified as students who were suitable candidates for enrichment in Chemistry. Each year the University of Melbourne offers an extension course for high-achieving Year 11 chemistry students which consists of 14, 2-hour advanced classes to prepare students for the qualifying exam for the Chemistry Olympiad. It also gives students a head start for Year 12, covering much of the content along with topics from first year University. The sessions were co-presented by the Chemistry Education Association and the University of Melbourne.

Jack and Rory were both really excited to be given the opportunity by St Joseph’s to participate in this program. They felt that it gave them a great head start for Year 12. Some of their highlights included: learning a broader range of chemistry topics, developing a connection with the University of Melbourne, developing a deeper understanding of the current curriculum and most of all, doing the program together. Jack and Rory are a dynamic duo, often bouncing ideas off each other, discussing problems and collaborating to find solutions in class. Jack commented that they would often call each other after the Monday evening lecture to debrief and discuss ideas.

At the conclusion of the lecture series, Jack and Rory sat the Chemistry Olympiad Exam. The two-hour exam was held online and administered by the school. Rory said the exam was hard for them both, but welcomed the opportunity to experience exams. The exam results have not been released yet.

I would like to commend Jack and Rory on their enthusiasm for the program and willingness to see it through to the end!
