Yr 10 Community Service -Lunch at the Uniting Church Hall

Terry Molan

As part of the RE curriculum at Year 10 level, each student is expected to participate in some form of community service during semester 2.

Community service teaches essential values that are difficult to acquire in the classroom. First, responsible citizenship involves making positive contributions for the betterment of others. Support offered can enrich the lives of those in need of supplies, food, or simply some one to talk to. Becoming engaged teaches effective communication skills, enhances problem-solving abilities, and strengthens the sense of teamwork. Performing community service gives our students a unique opportunity to see the world from different perspectives while been of service to others.

On Tuesday September 13, 5 Year 10 students, Mr. Leo McMahon and myself worked as team to prepare and serve a fantastic lunch to clients at the Uniting Church hall. Roast chicken served with roasted vegetables, tomato and onion pie and thick brown onion gravy.  The meal was certainly a hit with the clients. This was followed up by a creative desert designed by Mr. McMahon, which was also very well received by the participants.

I would like to congratulate Bailey Baker, Angus Kissel, Ava Nicholson, Caitlin Urquhart and Emily Pearce on the amazing job they did. They worked well as a team and did all tasks requested of them without hesitation. They were confident and enthusiastic in going about their duties, and were wonderful representatives of Monivae College. Bravo.
