Sports Report

Sarah Byron

Glenelg Division Basketball

A massive effort was enacted by our four Yr. 7 and 8 teams in dominating the boards at the recent GD Basketball competition held at HILAC. The Yr. 7 girls went into their 1st game a very strong contender, showing they were a force to be reckoned with as they didn't allow their opposition to score. As their second game was against the same team, rather than have a repeat performance, the coaches agreed to having a ‘friendly’ game and Monivae gave Portland some players to put the game on a more even footing. This game was played in spirit. Thanks to Paul Cleaver for coaching the Yr 7 girls, and Maddison Rhook as the Team manager.

The Yr. 7 boys, coached by Matt Dunn, weren’t about to let the girls show them up and dominated in all their games. It was obvious that this team were very cohesive from the start. Their game plays quickly came together and were well executed. Although not all the players have played together, they quickly learnt each other’s strengths and utilised them. Thanks Matt, for leading the boys from the bench, and your time and effort. Thanks also to Zac Burgess for your assistance as Team Manager.

The Yr. 8 boys were coached by Mr. Ough, and ably assisted by Charlie Alexander. They headed into their first game quietly confident that they could hold off Portland for their first win, which they did. Heading into their second game, the Yr. 8 boys ensured that they were set up for another win, which they did easily. At the end of the day, after an easy win over Heywood, they were victorious in all games.

Lead by our Sports Captain Tahlia Ross, the Yr. 8 girls had a tough first game, although they found their feet and made light work of their opposition in the end. The girls continued to control the Yr. 8 competition and won all their games. Thanks to Belinda Carroll for her assistance as the Yr. 8 girls Team manager.

I would also like to thank Renae Porter for the mammoth effort in coordinating all the umpires for the day. She had a very confident team of umpires from Monivae; Ella Sevior, Tana Nedziwe and Grace Cleaver. Thank you to all Senior students who assisted on the day.

All four teams will head to Ballarat on Friday 28th October. More information will be sent to all basketballers and umpires.

Clay Target Shooting

With only one School competition completed so far this year, the Monivae Clay Target Shooting Team has made a tremendous start. Having recently competed at the South West Zone Clay Target competition in Noorat, three of Monivae's team members were able to qualify for the State championships which will be held in Echuca at a later date. Congratulations to Alicia Eats, Tom Clark and Hugo Hedley. Tom Clark came home with 2nd place for the Senior boys.

Not only have the team's leaders been impressed by some high scores by everyone, but also by the consistent improvement of newer team members. This only goes to show the effort and commitment that has been put in by all the teachers, parents and volunteers that have given up their own time to come and help out with our weekly training. So on behalf of the team, thank you all!

On Monday 12th September, the Glenelg Division Committee, along with Hamilton Clay Target Club, organised a competition for the Yr. 10-12 students.
