Kindergarten Sleepover
Term 4 is an exciting time for Kindergarten. Not only is it the end of a huge first year at school but it is also when we have the Kindergarten Sleepover. This will be held in the Learning Centre / Library on Friday, 9th November 2018. Children can begin arriving from 5.45pm to set up camp in the library and will then join Year 1 and 2 in the new hall for the K-2 Games Night. Kindergarten children will need to be picked up from the library by 8am on Saturday morning.
K-2 Games Night
The K-2 Games Night will be held in the school hall on Friday, 9th November 2018 from 6:00 to 7:30pm. The cost is $5 per student or $10 per family. Included in the entry price will be a sausage sizzle and a drink for the students.
Mathematics Overview of Learning
Please find attached additional activities to support the learning that is occurring in the K-6 mathematics learning spaces during Week 1-2 of Term 4.
Strategies for Self-Monitoring Comprehension
Over the last two weeks, students in the K-6 learning spaces have focused on the comprehension strategy of monitoring. This requires you to be aware of your own thinking while you read. It requires you to recognise when you have stopped understanding what you are reading.
When people don’t have good comprehension and get to a part in their reading that they don’t understand, they tend to keep reading. This is because they often don’t know what else to do.
Fix-up strategies are used when the reader needs to self-monitor. Self–monitoring is when readers are aware of their own mistakes. They listen to their own voice and analyse what they are reading for meaning and correct pronunciation of words. It usually involves rereading to get it right. It is important for students to learn ‘fix-up strategies’ to use when they find themselves not engaged with or not understanding the text they are reading.
The following PDF will provide further information to support your child with the use of monitoring when reading in order for students to comprehend more challenging texts.
YEAR 1 ASSEMBLY
