Catholic Mission World Mission Month

October is World Mission Month and is celebrated every year in every country wherever there are Christians committed to building a better world for all of God's people. This year, World Mission Sunday is 28th October 2018.

The theme of this year’s Catholic Mission Month is: ‘Healing a nation through education’ with a special action focus on Myanmar.

As we reflect on Pope Francis’ call for each one of us to reflect on the fact that ‘I am a mission on this Earth; that is the reason why I am here in this world’. How do we contribute to Jesus’ mission of life for all and for everyone to have life to the full? We invite you to wonder about the importance of education as a path to dignity, opportunity and peace for the people of Myanmar.

We hope that the students’ understanding of ‘mission’ will be nurtured and that students will be encouraged and supported to live as Christ challenges us…

Missionary activity is fundamentally a going out of oneself in love, a reaching out to see God in everyone and to share God’s love with each person we meet – especially our poor and marginalised. Catholic Mission around the world has the responsibility of promoting a dignified and fruitful celebration of World Mission Day. Jesus’ mission of creating a world where all can live a fully dignified life is still far from completion. Therefore, the whole month of October has been dedicated to reflecting on the central mission of the Church to help all Christians in their commitment to Christ’s mission of love, mercy, forgiveness, peace and justice for the world.

This year for World Mission Day 2018 Pope Francis says:

“Never think that you have nothing to offer, or that nobody needs you. Many people need you. Think about it! Each of you, think in your heart: many people need me”

Our Catholic Mission Month Activities

Real Talk

Real Talk is coming to St Philomena's School in November, running sessions for students in Year 4, 6, 7 and 9.

Real Talk Australia is an organisation that is all about getting REAL on the topics of sex, relationships and personal identity. Based on Catholic Christian values, Real Talk provides up-to-date resources, presentations and programs that help young people to understand God’s amazing plan for love and life.

It is important for young people to know that they are of great value, that they have a purpose and also for them to have an understanding of the topics of relationships and sex. Young people today receive countless mixed messages about these topics, and can be unaware or confused about the precious gift they hold. (Cf: Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1632; Sacred Congregations for Catholic Education, 1997, 18).

We appreciate the importance of the role of parents in the education of their children. Our aim is to complement and not replace, the present instruction of your children. (Cf: Familiaris Consortio, 37)

Real Talk’s Love and Life Seminars are an opportunity for young people to hear from trained outside presenters about these topics. Real Talk presents this topic in a fun, interactive and contemporary way whilst being real and honest with the students. We seek to encourage and empower students to make positive choices that show respect for others and for themselves.
