Visit from the New Education Counsellor of the Consulate-General

of P.R. China in Melbourne

Mr. Wang Ying, the new Education Counsellor from the Consulate-General of P.R.C. in Melbourne visited Melbourne Girls’ College (MGC) on Tuesday the 27th of November. Accompanying him were Education Consul Mr. Nie Wenkai and Ms. Tian Qingfang.

The guests were warmly welcomed by Principal Karen Money who took them on a school tour. Mrs. Money introduced MGC’s philosophy of Education and a wide range of curricular and co-curricular programs. Ms. Lucy Chen, founder of the Confucius Classroom at MGC shared the history of the Confucius Classroom and its contribution to promoting teaching and learning of Chinese language and culture. Through the Confucius Classroom Program, students at MGC have enjoyed many opportunities to learn about the Chinese culture. Activities such as Chinese cultural day, China study tour, Beijing International Summer Camp, Global Village Chinese Speaking Competition, excursions to Chinese museums and cinemas have increased students’ interest and enhanced students’ understanding of the language and culture. As a result, MGC has witnessed non-background students such as Emily McDonald, Cassandra Furst, Sophie Cutter, Daniel Del Rosario, Hyun Jeong Roh, Milla Harrison and Matilda Smithers winning scholarships to study at prestigious universities in China.

Both Mrs Money and Ms Chen thanked the Consulate-General of P.R.C. for its support for MGC’s Chinese program. Mr. Wang Ying was impressed by MGC’s programs and commended on the academic success of the students. He praised Mrs Money for her leadership and an international vision for education. He also expressed their unwavering support for Chinese language teaching and cultural activities at MGC.
