Malmo Scholarship

A significant financial scholarship to the sum of $30,000 for a

Maffra Secondary College Year 12 student.

Each year, starting in 2021, Jeannie and Jakob are donating the funding to cover a scholarship to a student in Year 12 at Maffra Secondary College who is continuing to study towards a University Degree. The recipient of the award will receive a total of $30,000, in the form of an annual stipend of $10,000 per year for the each of the first 3 years of a university course.

Jakob Malmo has a longstanding connection to Maffra Secondary College. He was a student in the last form at the Maffra Higher Elementary School (1954) and was in the first form 5 at the newly established Maffra High School (1955). The teaching and training that he received during his study at Maffra enabled him to study at the University of Melbourne then the University of Sydney to complete a Bachelor of Veterinary Science Degree. Until his recent retirement he practised as a cattle veterinarian in the Maffra area. Jeannie Malmo has experience initially as a teacher, then as a primary school principal over a very long career. It is this passion for education and their connection to Maffra that has driven their decision to continue supporting the further education for one Year 12 student each year from our College.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the recipient must:

  • Be a current VCE Year 12 Student enrolled at Maffra Secondary College
  • Have been a student of Maffra Secondary College for a minimum of 3 years
  • Be planning to commence full-time University study the year following VCE graduation (no deferrals)

Recipients need to apply, addressing the Key Selection Criteria. Once submitted, the panel will short-list the written applications before interviewing the short-listed applicants and selecting the recipient from the interviewees. Once interviews are conducted, the scholarship will be awarded based on the recommendations of a panel.

In cases where selection is very competitive, preference may be given to a student who has submitted a VTAC application to study a Bachelor degree in a science, technology, engineering, mathematics or medicine (STEMM) discipline at an Australian University. The scholarship is, however, open to students who are planning to study a Bachelor degree in any discipline.

To retain the scholarship for the three-year period, the recipient must:

  • Have been accepted to study a Bachelor degree at an Australia University
  • Remain enrolled in their degree, in a full-time study program
  • Update the selection panel each year on progress, achievements and their plans for the following year
  • Satisfactorily complete all subjects each year. If a scholarship recipient does not achieve this then they will need to meet with the selection panel to discuss whether the scholarship continues or is withdrawn

We are humbled by the generosity of Jakob and Jeannie and are really looking forward to seeing who the inaugural scholarship winner will be. This will be announced at the Maffra Secondary College Presentation night in December.
