Brother Olly's Wheelchairs
Wheelchairs for Kids are a group of retiree volunteers under the guidance of Christian Brother Br. Olly Pickett and Rotary Club of Scarborough Rotarian Gordon Hudson, who make and distribute up to 300 wheelchairs per month to poor disabled children in developing countries. Millions of wheelchairs are needed. It costs $200 to build a wheelchair and gives each child the freedom of mobility and liberates a carer.
At OLA we collect ring pulls from cans and at the end of each term we deliver these to the workshop. The scrap aluminium is sold and the funds used to buy materials to make the wheelchairs. Each class have a specially marked container that they keep these ring pulls in. At the end of the year the class that has collected the most ring pulls is given a token of appreciation for all their efforts. Please ask family and friends to start collecting ring pulls, so we can make a difference! Proceeds from our annual Book Fair and Second Hand book sale are also donated to Wheelchairs of Kids.
