What’s happening in our Learning Communities in

Term 4

Late last term, each year level teaching team came together to plan the teaching and learning for Term 4. You can read about what the plans are for your child’s learning community in the Term Overviews below.

Prep

The Prep Community will continue the focus on developing students' reading and writing skills. They will continue to use the helping hand of reading strategies (look at the picture, go back and reread, say the first sound, look at the chunks and skip the word and read on) to build the children’s reading skills. In Maths, they will be continuing to develop their Number skills including learning about division (sharing) and money.

The Integrated Inquiry unit is “I Like to Move it, Move it” focusing on Science and Design and Technology. All the Prep children will be investigating how things around us move.

Year 1 and 2

This term the Year 1 and 2 Community focus will be a variety of reading strategies to decode unfamiliar words and focusing on developing and extending the children’s literal and inferential comprehension skills. In Maths, there will be a focus on money, fractions and mapping and location. The Year 1 and 2 Integrated Inquiry unit is ‘This is Our Place!’ This unit has a geography and sustainability focus, and the children will be learning that people care for places that they feel a connection to.

Year 3 and 4

The Year 3 and 4 Community will be continuing to build their reading comprehension through asking questions about a text, practicing making inferences and comparisons. They will be continuing to develop their research skills. The children have been using their Writer’s notebook during remote learning and this will continue in Term 4. For Maths, the community will be focusing on statistics and probability and measurement. The children will learn about making healthy choices that impact positively their mind and bodies through the Integrated Inquiry unit ‘Junior Masterchef’.

Year 5 and 6

The Year 5 and 6 Community will continue to develop their public speaking skills by clarifying content, understanding language features and delivering presentations. They will be presenting their campaigns about an issue to the class and voting for what they feel is the most effective campaign. In Maths, they will be working on creating budgets, using percentages, 3D shapes and nets and estimating, measuring and comparing angles. Over the term, the teachers and students will complete the ‘We Are Makers of Change!’ integrated Inquiry unit from Term 3 and begin a Wellbeing unit about having a positive mindset.

How you can continue to support your child at home

Over the last two terms, you have done an amazing job at supporting your child/children. While the children are back learning onsite, they will still need to do some learning at home. This will be through:

  • Reading each night
    • Prep, Year 1 and Year 2: 10 -15 minutes
    • Year 3 and 4: 15 minutes
    • Year 5 and 5: 20 minutes
  • Practice counting with your child and talk to them about the Maths involved in different household activities for example - cooking, shopping
  • Ensure your child completes their homework
    • Years 3 and 4: Approximately 60-80 minutes per week
    • Year 5 and 6: Approximately 100-120 minutes per week
  • Talk to your child/children about how they are feeling each day. They may be anxious over this week and next as they transition back to school.
