Literacy
Reading and Viewing
Students will be exploring a series of texts including digital forms that will integrate our Religion and Space inquiry topics. They shall focus on strategies when thinking within, beyond and about the texts read. The texts take students on a journey through space, in particular, our planets whereby they will be exposed to many literal, inferential strategies that enable them to utilize knowledge, skills, understandings and make connections. Related activities will be done to enrich and relate this content understanding in relationship to themselves and the world.
Writing
The focal point of writing this term will be writing to entertain. Students will be exposed to forms of poetry writing in a variety of styles. This will include opportunities to try different planning methods and use a range of language features while following these writing structures. There shall be a particular focus on technical language, descriptive vocabulary and phrases to enhance the poetry.
Speaking and Listening
This term the focus shall be on further developing the capacity to speak confidently, audibly and with expression. The students will have an opportunity to create, produce and recite a creative piece of writing to an audience.
Numeracy
Measurement and Geometry / Shape
Our focus is on extending our understanding of three-dimensional objects and their nets, comparing areas using metric units and describing and comparing two-dimensional shapes.
Number and Algebra
This term we will undertake a unit using the four operations, using worded problems with single and multi-steps in real and imagined world settings. We will explore the use of brackets and the order of operations to write number sentences. We will make connections between fractions, decimals and percentages.
Religious Education
Creation
In this unit, the students will explore Genesis in relation to Creation and will read bible passages to explain their understandings behind the events.
Advent
Students learn that Advent is a time of waiting and preparing for the birth of the Son of God at Christmas. They explore the writings of the prophet Isaiah and the symbolism of the Jesse Tree to reveal signs of God’s presence in the lives of the Old Testament people and in their own lives today.
Inquiry
Our unit this term, ‘To Infinity and Beyond’ is founded in scientific concepts that will provide students with an opportunity to pursue a specific area of space of their own choosing. Prior to undertaking and designing the task, students will be exposed to thematic vocabulary and scientific concepts, inclusive of, but not limited to the relative size, distance and order of planets in our solar system.
Social & Emotional Wellbeing
Problem Solving
Problem-solving skills are an important part of the coping repertoire. The classroom program provides a number of learning activities to develop students’ problem-solving skills. It is important to help students learn a range of problem-solving skills through applied learning tasks, so that they are able to cope with the challenges that they face in the future. Problem-solving is identified by the World Health Organisation as a key skill for health.To be able to solve problems, children need to be able to think critically and evaluate the consequences of various actions.
Leadership
We will be continuing to develop strategies and skills that foster leadership throughout the term. The Year 6’s will take on the leadership role of mentoring the Year 5’s for their 2021 leadership groups.
