Nazareth Taster Day

Last Thursday 3rd March, the Year 5 students were invited to Nazareth College in Noble Park North for a 'taster day'. The Taster Day provided students with the opportunity to take part in a variety of classes which gave them a 'taste' of secondary school.

The Year 5s along with Mr Jones, Miss Gregory and Mrs Ithier arrived at Nazareth College at 9:30 am ready for a day filled with new experiences. There was excitement in the air as our students were keen to experience secondary school life.

When we arrived, the staff welcomed us with a speech. Students were given a Nazareth tote bag with lots of goodies inside. Our students then got into their three allocated groups and completed their first period of the day. Some of our students commented on how big the school grounds were. Luckily we had their teachers guiding us to the classrooms or else who knows where we would've ended up!

Our students participated in three classes for the duration of the day, including Food Technology, Italian, PE, Science, Dance, Drama and Woodwork. The SJV students showed exemplary behaviour and loved the atmosphere of feeling like a secondary school student for the day. Another highlight was seeing past SJV students and seeing them flourish in the secondary school setting.

We thank Nazareth College for the kindness and support they showed our students and staff. The chatter in the bus on the way back to SJV was filled with positive comments about the day. It was definitely a day to remember!

That day on Thursday the 3rd of March, I woke up earlier than usual. I was pretty excited for the Nazareth Taster Day excursion.

Early in the morning, a bus came to school to drive us to Nazareth. We were going there to learn about what it feels like to learn at a high school for the day.

When we got here, the school looked gigantic. We did fantastic activities together in groups. We learnt new and interesting subjects such as cooking, science, Woodwork and other unique subjects.

My favourite activities were Woodwork and performing arts. My group didn't do cooking but if we did, I think it would've been one of my favourites.

I enjoyed Woodwork because it was easier than I thought. We got to build our own pencil case and even got to take them home! It was so satisfying.
It was a very fun day and I had lots of fun.

Last Thursday I went to Nazareth by bus. The first thing we did was sit in the hot sun. When the principal stop talking my group went to STEM. In STEM we made bottle rockets we learnt so much about pressure and releasing air. When we were in the classroom we talked about what STEM stands for. We learnt that the more pointy the cone was the  higher  it would go. On the bottle rocket there were 4 fins on the side and one pointy cone on the top. We all went outside and put safety goggles on and put water in our rocket. Some rockets worked and some didn’t.
The next thing we did was eat our snack when recess finished we went to dance. Dance was really fun, we danced to the song R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S. When I was dancing I felt happy because I love dancing. My favorite move was the pizza tray, we had to be in partners my partner was Sofia. I messed up a little bit of the dance move. My teacher had 2 assistants, their names were Gabi and Ali.
The next thing we did was eat lunch. After we ate lunch we went to art. My art teacher's name was Mrs Green. In art we made beautiful calendars. I circled my birthday and important dates.
When I went to Nazareth I had lots of fun and I enjoyed it. I got to see lots of old SJV students at Nazareth. My favorite thing to do at Nazareth was dance because it was funky and fun and it also had very good moves in the dance.

Last week on Thursday, the whole grade 5 level went to Nazareth to see what high school will be like. So when we got to school the teachers put us in groups, I was put with my friends so I was happy with my group. After 15 minutes on the bus we finally arrived! We had to wait another 15 minutes…
Finally we went to our first activity, my group had science as our activity. When we walked into the classroom and took our seats the teacher said that we were going to use invisible ink! The teacher gave us a chemical and a cotton swab, then we dipped it in the chemical and wrote a message and once we wrote our message we let it dry. After the first part of the science class was done the teacher said we were going to do something called chromatology where we got a little paper circle and put some colour on it and then dipped it in water and then we saw what colours are used in other colours. Finally we used a blackberry to reveal our hidden message.
The next activity we did was woodwork. When we went into the room the teacher said we were going to make a pencil holder. But when I was making mine I started to feel sick so I told the teacher and he let me sit down outside. I felt sick because it was very loud and I was dehydrated, so for most of the class I just sat outside and rested until the next break. We also got some zooper doopers when we were at break.
After the break I felt better again and my group went to performing arts. We learned a dance and song from Aladdin called “You Never had a Friend like Me”. It was quite fun to sing and dance.
So overall, it was a fun time at Nazareth except for the fact that I got sick on the trip.

On a bright Thursday morning, all the Grade 5s were ready to go to Nazareth. I was really excited to see what high school was going to be like. As I jumped out of the bus, I got more excited!
First my group and I went to an amazing class called Food Tech. The teachers welcomed us with a lot of joy. My partner was Lucia. She was really kind. The teacher explained the activity very carefully so we could understand. My helper was a Year 10 student who was very considerate. My favourite part was making the choc drops into balls. We added coconut to make it have some flavour.
It was one of the best days I’ve had. Doing sports and Italian was incredible because everybody was so enthusiastic. My favourite activity was Food Tech because we got to make food and experience something new in high school. I hope I get to do this in the future.
