Foundation (Prep)

Hi, welcome to Prep C!
Numeracy
In Maths this week, the children have been learning about positional language, words that refer to the place where something or someone is, often in relation to other things, such as above, under, beside or between. We enjoyed exploring this language outdoors and then made a class big book about our learning, which is now in our class library.
The students were also introduced to the concept of making a clever guess (estimating). They worked together in pairs to estimate the number of Unifix cubes in a container and then counted them to check how close their estimate was.
Writer's Workshop
Students have now been introduced to all of the lowercase letters. We will continue to revisit the families of letters and begin blending the sounds together to make words.
When introducing the skill of blending sounds, we often use small 3-letter words, referred to as CVCs (consonant/vowel/consonant). These can be easily sounded out such as, dog, red, tin, jog, cap, etc.
If you are trying this at home and your child is having difficulties, please continue to practice the sounds of the individual letters first.
Reader's Workshop
The children have been introduced to their Alphabet books. Each week we focus on a letter of the alphabet and brainstorm words we know that begin with this sound.
Last week we looked closely at the letter Cc and this week we have focused on Aa. During one of our Reader's Workshop lessons, students were asked to try and read the CVC word and draw a picture to show their understanding. Children who were not ready to read these words independently were supported in a teacher group.
Inquiry
As part of our Inquiry unit about ourselves, our family and our community, students enjoyed creating a portrait of their family. We have discussed that families can look different but there are many things we share that are similar. The children enjoyed talking about what makes their family special to them.
Buddies
It was exciting to spend some time with our buddies on Thursday afternoon. The Grade 6 students came to visit and to help us make flowers for the Warrandyte Festival this weekend.
I hope you all have fun at the Festival and have a lovely weekend.
