Curriculum

A short but wonderful week in Foundation! In Literacy last week students continued to explore sharing and communicating their ideas through drawing pictures and labelling these pictures with the sounds they can hear in words. In particular, students focused on listening to the initial sound in a word, which was also practised through different reading activities and games. We have seen lots of students demonstrate a love of learning by challenging themselves to write more than one sound that they can hear in words, such as the ending sound.

This week in writing, students also further explored our guided inquiry topic ‘identity’ by discussing what makes them, them! Students shared a self-portrait, their age, their favourite colour and favourite food. We noticed that some of us had the same favourite foods or colours and some of us were the same age. We also noticed that a lot of us were different and discussed how this is ok and super special as it makes us who we are.

Students explored the zones of regulations through a writing activity where they found different strategies to put in their very own ‘tool box’ to help them when they are experiencing emotions in the blue, yellow or red zone. Strategies such as going for a short walk, taking deep breaths or having a quiet break with a book or some colouring were popular strategy choices.

In Maths, students continued to explore place value by looking at the smaller parts that make up a larger number. Students were engaged in various activities where they were able to use hands on materials such as two different coloured unifix blocks to show the different parts of a number. Students then challenged themselves to write a number sentence to record what they found.

This week we noticed a drawing with eyelashes on it and some students suggested they were eyes that belonged to a girl. We spoke about why we thought this and noticed that both boys and girls have eye lashes, so the eyes that we saw in the picture could belong to either a girl or a boy.

Pupil of the Week

FG: Mallory M -

For showing independence when matching pictures with sounds in Reading this week. You were able to follow steps and use problem solving skills. Well done, Mallory!

FH: Joey X -

For demonstrating your love of learning in Mathemtics this week by challenging yourself to record the way you see and can make different numbers. You used outstanding teamwork to play our maths games with different partners. Great job Joey!

FJ: Jennifer D -

For demonstrating a love of learning by challenging yourself to write a matching number sentence when recording how you saw the different parts of a number. Well done Jennifer!
