Leadership Centre

Term 1 Week 8

Curriculum

Halo semuanya - hello everyone!

Another busy and fun week in the Leadership Centre as we continued our learning journey. This week we became creative marketers, media critics and even became our own auto-biographers. You might be asking how? Read on to find out!

For Guided Inquiry this week, students began the final part of our unit on Ethics and Emotions by exploring a range of ideas around Identity and in particular their own. Just like an auto biographer, students were required to self-reflect on their own lives and in particular positive words that describe them. Instead of writing their own biographies however, students put these words into a crossword and began developing ideas that they will use to create their own t-shirt design depicting the pictures, words and symbols that show All About (Them). We can’t wait to see the results! A reminder for your children to bring in a plain white T-shirt that they will be able to draw on for this activity!

In Writing, students continued to explore different persuasive techniques. As mentioned last week, they began using colours, language, and other visual elements to create their own tourism advertisements. This week they continued to explore these creative marketing skills and finalised their advertisements with links demonstrating their understanding of the persuasive techniques being used! Which destination might you be travelling to in the upcoming Easter school holidays? See below.

Reading sessions this week involved students practising the skills of evaluating and identifying the persuasive techniques used in a range of different pieces of media. Students explored visuals from media pieces about the Australian floods of 2011 and 2022 and analysed the persuasive techniques in these videos. They also investigated how different linguistic elements in newspaper articles can have a persuasive effect on the reader. It’s important to recognise when someone is trying to persuade you! If you know it is happening, you can use common sense to help you form opinions and make decisions.

In Mathematics, students continued to expand on their knowledge of Place Value and Money. To begin the week, classes continued to engage themselves in respective Maths Masterclasses where they learned a range of different Mathematics concepts involving Place Value and Money. In each of the remaining maths sessions, a range of different fermi questions were tasked to students. A “Fermi Question” asks for a quick estimate of a quantity that seems difficult or impossible to determine precisely. Fermi's approach to such questions was to use common sense and rough estimates of quantities to piece together a ball-park value. A couple of examples of the Fermi questions posed were: 1) How many people could you fit into the classroom? How many soccer balls? and 2) How old are you if you are a million seconds old? A million hours old?  A million days old?

We are looking forward to seeing you all in the upcoming three-way conferences.

Have a wonderful week,

Mrs Brisbane, Miss Walker, Miss Campbell, Ms Bennetts, Mr Burrill and Mr Dix
